Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to enhance the appearance of my IKEA Besta system without having to buy completely new furniture. I am especially interested in using wooden trim and various decorative elements because I value natural materials and a cozy atmosphere.

I am particularly curious about how wooden trim can be used to create accents – for example, on edges, fronts, or perhaps as dividing strips. Which types of wood are recommended to complement the typical Besta surfaces well? And what about practical implementation: Should I use glue, screws, or would mounting adhesive be better?

Additionally, I am open to creative decoration ideas that don’t look too overwhelming but still give the furniture a special touch. Maybe there are also tips on colors or suitable combinations to complete the look.

In short: How can I visually upgrade IKEA Besta with wooden trim and decorative elements so that it looks elegant, high-quality, and personal? I’m really looking forward to your suggestions and experiences!

Wow, great topic! I upgraded my cabinet with oak trim and I’m really impressed!

I simply glued the trim to the edges and secured it with small nails. The grain really stands out – it adds a lot of character!

For decoration, I found simple picture frames and small vases work well. It’s important not to overdecorate, otherwise it can quickly look cluttered.

I can definitely recommend it; the DIY process is a lot of fun and the result looks fantastic!

For an objective addition: When choosing wooden strips, I especially recommend oak or ash, as these wood types offer a good balance of hardness, appearance, and workability.

For attachment, using construction adhesive combined with spot screws is optimal, particularly for longer strips, to prevent warping. Before applying, the strips should definitely be pre-treated with fine sandpaper (grit 180-220) to ensure a smooth surface.

For decorative elements, a limited selection of items with clear lines and neutral colors is suitable to avoid overshadowing the structure and design of the BESTA system. This keeps the focus on the furniture's structure without distracting the eye from the essentials.

Wood strips are best attached using construction adhesive; it usually holds better and cleaner than screws.

How do you know that? Screws provide mechanical strength, while construction adhesive can come loose.

But if that’s sufficient for you and others, that’s fine.

This combination is probably the best, as it combines a flexible and a rigid connection, preventing follow-up repairs.

Sure, DIY projects with flat-pack furniture are popular, but always keep an eye on quality, otherwise the strips can come loose at any time.
