Hello everyone,
I plan to use some IKEA Malm furniture in the bathroom and other damp areas, but the problem is that this furniture is not originally designed for moist environments. My specific question is: What measures do you recommend to modify or prepare Malm furniture so that it can withstand damp rooms, such as bathrooms, over the long term without being damaged by moisture? I am especially interested in practical advice regarding surface treatment, ventilation, and other protective measures that prevent moisture from penetrating the wood or particleboard. It would also be helpful to know which mistakes to avoid when using Malm cabinets in damp areas. Thank you in advance for your experiences and ideas!

This protects against moisture and gives you some peace of mind if the furniture comes into contact with water vapor.
Also, avoid placing the furniture directly against walls where splashes occur – keeping a gap above the baseboards prevents trapped moisture. This way, everything stays nicely ventilated.
A little tip: place a small dehumidifier in the room; it really helps to preserve this type of furniture. Not overly complicated, but very effective. Good luck! ;-)

I recommend the following measures:
1. Sealing: An additional treatment with water-repellent clear varnish or polyurethane lacquer improves moisture protection. All visible surfaces as well as edges should be carefully sealed.
2. Distance from the wall: Furniture should not be placed directly against damp walls to allow air circulation and prevent condensation.
3. Indoor climate: Constant ventilation or a dehumidifier is important to keep humidity below 60%, as prolonged exposure to higher moisture can damage the furniture.
4. Usage limitation: Malm furniture is more suitable for bathroom areas without direct water splashes or continuous wetness (e.g., not recommended for use inside shower areas).
That is exactly the point: trapped moisture leads to swelling and deformation. Therefore, a combination of sealing and optimal placement is recommended.

To maximize the usability of Malm furniture in damp environments, I recommend a structured approach, which I will briefly outline here:
1. Preparation: Unpack the cabinets and lightly sand all surfaces, especially edges and drill holes, using fine sandpaper.
2. Primer: Apply a water-repellent wood preservative or a specialized primer suitable for MDF/particleboard.
3. Sealing: Apply several wet-on-wet coats of high-quality clear varnish, ideally polyurethane-based. This increases the protective layer.
4. Assembly: When putting the furniture together, ensure there is a gap from the wall by using baseboards or placing the furniture on small casters or spacers.
5. Room climate: Continuous ventilation, ideally with controlled humidity, prevents moisture damage.
Common mistakes:
- Skipping the sealing of edges and drill holes.
- Placing furniture directly on wet floors or close to showers.
This sums it up well – for areas right next to sinks or showers, I would recommend using different furniture.
If you have questions, I’m happy to provide more information on types of varnishes or application tips!

I used Malm dressers for a while in a small guest bathroom. It’s really important to place the furniture on feet or small casters to prevent moisture from seeping up from below. Additionally, I protected the back panels with a waterproof foil fleece.
Of course, it’s not ideal, but with proper care and ventilation, the furniture lasts surprisingly long. What worried me, however, was the risk of mold developing behind and underneath the furniture – this should definitely be avoided.
I can confirm this is often where the problem lies. Applying enough paint or sealant makes a noticeable difference.
