Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought Malm furniture from Ikea, mainly wardrobes and dressers. Now I’m wondering how to use these pieces for as long as possible without them wearing out or getting damaged quickly.

I am particularly interested in which care and maintenance measures make sense, whether there are special tips to prevent scratches or warping, and how to best keep the hinges and drawer mechanisms in good condition.

I’ve read that Malm furniture is made from particleboard and is less durable than solid wood. Therefore, it would be great to get tips on how to maintain its condition in the long term, maybe also with simple repair methods if something goes wrong.

Looking forward to your experiences and advice, thanks in advance!

In addition to the tips mentioned, please note that Malm furniture is made from coated particleboard, which is sensitive to moisture.

Therefore, water stains should be wiped off immediately with a dry cloth. Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the boards to swell.

Additionally, care should be taken not to place heavy objects on surfaces that are too small to avoid pressure marks.

When maintaining the hinges, it is important to use an appropriate lubricant, such as silicone or Teflon spray, which does not attract dust and provides long-lasting protection.

In my experience, these points are crucial to ensure that Malm furniture remains stable and usable for a long time.

"Regarding the hinges and drawers: lubrication is really important"

I can only agree with that. When in doubt, it’s recommended to order original replacement parts from Ikea, as these are specifically made for Malm furniture.

During assembly, screws should not be tightened too much to avoid damaging the material.

Additionally, distributing weight evenly helps prevent deformation of the shelves.

For those who want to "take good care" of the furniture, storing small items in containers can prevent unnecessary stress on the drawers.
