Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought Malm furniture from Ikea, mainly wardrobes and dressers. Now I’m wondering how to use these pieces for as long as possible without them wearing out or getting damaged quickly.
I am particularly interested in which care and maintenance measures make sense, whether there are special tips to prevent scratches or warping, and how to best keep the hinges and drawer mechanisms in good condition.
I’ve read that Malm furniture is made from particleboard and is less durable than solid wood. Therefore, it would be great to get tips on how to maintain its condition in the long term, maybe also with simple repair methods if something goes wrong.
Looking forward to your experiences and advice, thanks in advance!

Hello,
to make Malm furniture last longer, I recommend placing the furniture as level and stable as possible when setting it up to avoid unnecessary stress. Uneven floors, especially with particleboard, can cause warping.
For maintenance: clean the surfaces regularly with a soft, damp cloth and a mild cleaning agent. Avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface.
Regarding hinges and drawers: lubrication is very important. You can use fine machine oil or a special furniture lubricant. If a drawer sticks or jams, first check if it is overloaded or if moisture has accumulated in the tracks.
If there are small damages like scratches or chipped edges, repair kits for wood-based materials can often help a lot. These usually include wax sticks or special adhesives for furniture, which can disguise or even fix some blemishes.

I really appreciate questions like this because I often feel uncertain about how much strain particleboard furniture can handle.
I personally own various versions of Malm furniture at home and admit that sometimes I worry they might wear out faster than I'd like.
What helps me is consciously avoiding overloading. I recently read:
I take this advice to heart.
You shouldn’t hesitate to check your furniture from time to time and tighten screws if necessary – having everything tight and stable gives a lot of peace of mind.

Hey,
I think it’s okay to be a bit gentle with Malm furniture – almost like caring for a good plant ;-) A little maintenance, a bit of attention, and it will reward you with a longer lifespan.
For example: use felt pads under heavy items to prevent surface scratches. And if something gets stuck, just oil the hinges briefly – it’s like making the furniture happy 😉
Honestly, a bit of repair with a wax stick or small touch-up pens in matching color can work wonders. These are little tricks that make the furniture look like new.
That’s how you give your furniture a longevity boost. Good luck – and don’t be too hard on your Malm, it won’t help!

For better clarity, here are some structured tips on how to extend the life of Malm furniture:
1. Placement: Avoid positioning the furniture close to radiators or in areas with significant temperature fluctuations.
2. Cleaning: Use a damp cloth; do not use harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges.
3. Load Capacity: Do not exceed the recommended weight limits for drawers and shelves.
4. Hinges & Slides: Oil them every few months with a light oil, such as sewing machine oil.
5. Repairs: Treat small scratches preferably with furniture repair kits from hardware stores that match the color.
6. Assembly: Regularly check all screws and tighten them as needed to ensure stability.
This helps prevent premature wear and maintains the furniture’s functionality over the long term.
