Hello everyone, I am planning to visually separate my living room and the adjacent study, and I am considering using the IKEA Platsa system as a room divider. I am particularly interested in how flexible this modular system is as a room divider without it appearing too bulky or closed off. Which combinations of open and closed elements make sense? How is the stability and safety, especially when placing the divider freely within the room? I am also curious about how to best utilize the Platsa system to create additional storage space without compromising the overall sense of space. Do you have any practical tips or personal experiences on how to use Platsa effectively and attractively as a room divider? Thanks in advance!

Good question, glapeo. IKEA actually offers special accessories like back panels in various colors and materials, which are particularly suitable for a room divider project to create a neat and decorative back side. There are also optional lighting options, such as LED strips that can be integrated into the shelves – these add atmosphere and highlight the room divider. Regarding height: 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) works well because it is tall enough to divide the space without overwhelming the room. Different heights within the unit can be structurally interesting, but may cause visual clutter in small rooms unless carefully planned. A uniform grid usually works best, and finishing near the ceiling can help visually organize the space.

I’m also curious how you handle different heights of PLATSA modules – doesn’t that look unsettling? I’m planning to build about 1.80 m high (5 ft 11 in).

In general, a clean, linear design approach is recommended, especially for room dividers. Varying heights can be used intentionally as a design feature but should not be combined randomly. A height of 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) is effective because it provides enough privacy while not overly obstructing the room. For stability and appearance, it is advisable to connect modules so that edges and transitions align neatly.

PLATSA works well as a room divider. I recommend having open compartments on the room side to maintain visibility, and closed compartments or doors facing your private area. Make sure it is stable by securing it to the wall.

I can confirm that. Additionally, when using the open compartments, you can also include lightweight curtains or fabric boxes to adjust the look as needed. And yes, securing it to the wall is advisable, even if the furniture stands freely. You can also use base plates with weights to prevent tipping.

I used Platsa as a room divider and recommend adding extra stability with angle brackets at the ceiling if possible. This is especially important for tall units. Open compartments are great for creating visible and airy storage, while closed ones provide space for private items. Placing plants on top also adds a nice touch.

PLATSA is ideal as a room divider, especially with an open front facing the living room. You can equip the back with panels that IKEA offers specifically for this purpose. For added safety, connect the modules together and secure them to the wall.
