PelinuHello everyone,
I recently purchased several furniture pieces from the Ikea Brimnes series, especially the bed with storage and some dressers. I’m interested in how to use these items in the most space-saving way possible in my small apartment. I would like to know if there are special layout options, combinations, or clever tips to maximize storage capacity without making the room feel cluttered. It is also important for me to understand how to easily access the storage drawers in everyday use, for example, when the bed is placed close to the wall. I look forward to tips from experienced users who might use the furniture multifunctionally or have optimized it specifically for small living spaces.

I would recommend that with the BRIMNES bed with drawers, you ensure there is enough space on the side for the drawers to be fully pulled out. If space is tight, you can also place boxes or baskets inside the drawers that can be easily lifted out. This makes handling easier.
Hello Pelinu,
I’m happy to give you a structured response, as BRIMNES furniture offers many options for space-saving use:
- Bed with 4 drawers: It’s important not to overfill a drawer so it remains easy to open. Flat items like bedding, accessories, or seasonal clothing work best.
- Dressers and cabinets: You can create internal order using dividers or small boxes. This way, you make efficient use of every centimeter (inch).
- Ideally, the bed should not be placed too close to the wall; leave at least 5–10 cm (2–4 inches) of clearance so the drawers can be comfortably pulled out.
- Another tip: Some users place small rolling boxes or crates in front of the bed to store smaller items and have quick access when needed.
I have also seen that some people use the back of cabinet doors for hooks or small organizers. This creates additional storage space.

Are there any options to use the drawers in a way that they can still be opened with minimal distance to the wall? Or perhaps alternative solutions to access the storage under the bed?
Also, I’m interested if anyone has tips on modular compatibility of dressers with the bed to better organize the room.

I’m familiar with the problem of limited space. 😊 From my experience with the BRIMNES bed, the drawers can still be opened if you replace the regular drawer handles with knobs that do not protrude much. This gives you a few extra millimeters (inches) of clearance.
- Additionally, you can place rollers or thin rugs under the drawers to make them slide more easily, especially when the space is tight.
- For combining furniture: position the BRIMNES bed as a room divider and use dressers as partition pieces on the sides or at the foot of the bed.
Ultimately, it helps to plan furniture based on the principle of “vertical storage first.” And when space is tight, often the best approach is to embrace the idea that less can be more!

I would like to add to the previous suggestions to clearly summarize the space-saving use of the Ikea BRIMNES furniture:
- The storage space under the BRIMNES bed is only partially accessible due to the drawers. The distance to the wall should be at least 5 cm (2 inches) to fully utilize the drawers.
- If space does not allow for this adjustment, using storage boxes inside the drawers is practical, as the drawers can then only be opened halfway.
- Dressers can be used modularly by combining them in height and width – the series is very flexible with various widths ranging from 70 to 140 cm (27.5 to 55 inches).
- A useful tip: use opposing drawer inserts or storage solutions, such as smaller boxes inside, to maintain order and efficiently use the space.
This results in a clear advantage in organizing storage with this furniture system; however, space restrictions for drawer extension must be taken into account.
