Hello everyone,
I want to use the IKEA Besta system as storage in our children’s room, but I’m unsure how to ensure it is safe and poses no risk of accidents for the kids. I’m particularly concerned about tipping stability, childproof locks, and possible protection against injuries from sharp edges.
Does anyone have experience using Besta as secure storage in a children’s room? Are there any specific tips for installation, safety measures, or recommendations on which combinations to avoid?
Thank you very much in advance for your advice!

I think it’s great that you’re putting so much thought into making IKEA Besta childproof. Sometimes the whole topic can feel overwhelming, but it’s definitely worth it. In our children’s room, I always try to securely attach the furniture to the wall and also lock or latch the doors.

I also believe it’s important for children to know which furniture is safe to climb on and which is off-limits. Communication is therefore part of safety as well. Taking care of rounded edges also helps you feel more relaxed overall.

Thanks to everyone for your helpful tips!

Your advice on wall mounting and the emphasis on child safety locks for doors and drawers have been especially useful. I was unsure whether it’s better to secure BESTA units with or without the backing panel, but your comments have made it clear how important strong wall anchors and regular inspections are.

I might also try using padding to soften the corners and will take your recommendations regarding the load limits into account.

If anyone has practical advice on the ideal combination of BESTA modules for a child’s room based on experience, I’d be very interested to hear it!
