DUKAR51Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to best use my IKEA Besta shelving unit in the entrance area as a shoe rack. The Besta system is originally designed for media furniture, but due to its dimensions, it fits my small hallway very well and feels sturdy. My specific question is: How can I modify or supplement the Besta to make it functional for shoe storage—both for everyday shoes, sneakers, and boots? Are there clever compartments, boxes, or inserts you would recommend to keep the shoes organized but also easily accessible? I’m also interested in how you have styled the unit visually so that, despite its rather simple appearance, it looks cozy and welcoming. Looking forward to your ideas and experiences!
You can use simple dividers in the Besta shelving unit to create compartments for individual shoes. For boots, taller compartments are suitable, possibly by leaving out some shelves. Alternatively, shallow boxes work well for organizing. Otherwise, labeling can help keep things organized.

how I can best use my IKEA Besta shelf in the entryway as a shoe rackSounds like a great DIY project! I think the Besta is really versatile. For shoes, I’d recommend a mix of open and closed compartments. Use open ones for shoes you grab quickly, and closed ones for clean sneakers or more delicate pairs. If you want to make the entryway feel cozy, you could add a top surface with cushions or plants, which fits well with the simplicity of the Besta. This way, the hallway becomes much more inviting. 😉
Regarding functionality: The Besta is well suited if you plan interior compartments in the doors. For shoes in particular, it is advisable to design the compartments tall enough so that boots do not need to be folded. Additional shelves made of acrylic or thin wood can be installed flexibly to accommodate multiple pairs on one level. Drawer inserts or removable boxes with ventilation help maintain order and prevent odors. Visually, I recommend light-colored fronts and discreet handles to create a pleasant atmosphere in the entrance area.

I believe you shouldn’t stretch its use too much just because it fits. There are dedicated shoe racks that offer better ventilation, which is very important for shoes. However, if you do use the Besta, you should at least make sure there’s airflow inside, for example by using perforated inserts or open back panels. Otherwise, it can quickly develop a musty smell, which is counterproductive.
