Bla61Hello everyone,
I am planning to install BILLY shelves from IKEA in my bathroom, but I am unsure of the best way to do this without the shelves getting damaged by moisture or splashing water. I am concerned about the correct placement and mounting, as well as possible protective measures to safeguard the shelves from water, since the bathroom is a humid environment. Does anyone have experience with this or specific tips on how to use BILLY shelves in a bathroom so they last a long time without damage such as swelling, mold, or warping? Thanks in advance for your answers!

Hello Bla61,
Here is a brief guide on how to protect your BILLY shelves in the bathroom:
1. Location choice: Avoid places where they are directly exposed to splashing water. Ideally, place the shelf against a wall that is not close to the shower or sink.
2. Sealing: There are special wood sealants or varnishes designed for damp environments. Apply these to all visible surfaces and edges of the shelf – including the back panel and interior sides – to minimize swelling.
3. Distance from wall and floor: Leave some air space between the shelf and the wall, using small spacers if necessary. Placing it directly on the floor is not ideal; a type of base or shelf feet is recommended.
4. Regular inspection: Check the shelf regularly for moisture damage. Small issues can often be addressed quickly.
5. Alternative: Ikea also offers shelves made from other materials that might be better suited, or you can reinforce the BILLY with waterproof film coverings.
Common mistakes are placing the shelf directly on tiles without protection and neglecting to seal the edges, which are particularly vulnerable. Hope this helps!

It can also help to stick small rubber or silicone pads under the shelves to prevent moisture from the floor transferring directly to the wood. And if you like, you can equip the shelf with waterproof boxes or baskets to protect the items stored inside.
So, with a bit of effort, it works out – you just have to remember that BILLY isn’t really designed as a moisture-resistant piece of furniture. But hey, who says it can’t work? 🙂
Additional Information:
BILLY shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which can resist moisture temporarily but may swell when exposed to consistently high humidity and direct water contact. Therefore:
- Use water-repellent sealants specifically designed for engineered wood products.
- Ensure proper mounting: Ideally, securely screw the shelf to the wall to prevent tipping or shifting.
- Avoid using the shelves in areas with heavy water exposure (e.g., directly next to a shower without splash protection).
- Base: Placing a rubber mat or similar under the shelf prevents moisture rising from the floor.
Summary: Protecting the shelves with sealant + secure installation + appropriate location choice = long-lasting use of BILLY in the bathroom.
