Hello everyone,

I am planning to use IKEA Billy shelves in a small damp area, specifically in a windowless bathroom where condensation regularly forms. My question is: How can I use Billy shelves in such humid environments without them swelling or getting damaged quickly?

Are there any special protective measures or treatment methods that make the shelves more resistant to moisture?

I look forward to tips, experiences, and recommendations!

Really exciting topic! 🙂

I’ve also experimented extensively with Billy shelves and can only say: marine varnish is invaluable!! Just apply a thick layer, especially on the shelves and edges. It provides excellent moisture protection and even looks good.

I also recommend small rubber pads as spacers under the shelf, to prevent moisture from rising up from the floor. This way, the shelves last a very long time in the bathroom.

Give it a try—I was personally surprised by how well it works!

The relative humidity is usually between 70-85% right after showering, but over a longer period it drops to about 50-55%.

I completely understand the concern about the shelves. I experienced something similar a while ago when I renovated my bathroom. What really helped me, besides sealing, was constant ventilation.

The time right after showering is especially critical: if possible, open a window or turn on a small dehumidifier. This protects not only the furniture but also your health!

You simply feel better knowing everything is well protected.

To revisit the technical details:

When using Billy shelves in damp rooms, it is essential to treat all wooden surfaces with a water-repellent varnish at least three times. It is important to ensure that the back sides of the shelves and the inner surfaces are also coated.

A good method is to seal the shelf parts before assembly, then smooth the edges again with filler, and finally finish with an acrylic sealant. This prevents moisture from penetrating into the material’s pores.

Regarding ventilation: door vents or ventilation grilles are also recommended to allow air circulation.

I would also be interested to know the size of the shelf and whether you plan to fasten it to the wall?

Good question! It will be a shelf measuring 80x30x202 cm (31x12x79 inches), the standard size, and I plan to fix it to the wall for stability.

Even small rubber pads as spacers under the shelf are advisable

That sounds very reasonable, I agree – the shelf will stand on tile flooring, which can sometimes be a bit damp.

My current plan is to thoroughly seal all components, sand them beforehand, seal the edges, and minimize contact with the floor using rubber pads.

Wall mounting is a good solution, as it reduces contact with the floor.

Don’t forget to avoid installing shelves directly under water sources. Always maintain some distance.

That makes sense to prevent warping. Another option to consider is using PVC edge banding glued onto wooden strips. These offer better moisture resistance than regular paints.

Also, I wonder if alternatives made of metal or coated wood might be more suitable for humid rooms. For example, shelves with melamine resin coating tend to have a longer lifespan in moist environments.

However, how important are appearance and price to you? These factors are often key with Billy shelves.
