Hello everyone, I want to start a DIY project where I customize furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series. I am especially interested in how to modify these pieces to make them truly unique while keeping them practical. Does anyone have tips or experience with working on Brimnes shelves, dressers, or beds, such as altering surfaces, replacing parts, or adding creative features? I am interested in both simple techniques like painting or using tape, as well as more complex changes like replacing fronts or adding lighting. Thanks in advance for your ideas!
In addition to the topic of surface treatment, I would recommend:
- First, clean the furniture with a sponge and warm dishwater to help paint and adhesive adhere better.
- Then, definitely use a high-quality primer, specially designed for smooth or melamine-coated surfaces.
- Proper sanding means lightly scuffing the surface without completely removing the coating, as this could cause swelling.
- Alternatively, consider using vinyl films in creative designs. These can be cut precisely and removed without leaving any residue.
Regarding assembly: If you are replacing fronts, be sure to follow the drilling patterns from Ikea, as they are standardized. This way, you can easily cut wood or plexiglass panels and combine them with suitable handles.
Finally, it is important to protect the furniture from direct moisture, as Brimnes is made from particleboard.

I would add some flair to the furniture by covering the fronts with leftover wallpaper or unusual fabrics instead of traditional paint – it looks very unique and cheerful. That’s a creative idea, but I see a practical disadvantage here: fabric or wallpaper can be prone to dirt and moisture. Especially furniture that is used daily should be more durable.
However, if it’s a purely decorative or low-traffic piece, there’s no objection. I’m more interested in how the long-term quality of such options holds up – does anyone have long-term experience?
I’d also like to point out that remodeling carries the risk of lowering the resale value. Has anyone experienced how much DIY work on IKEA furniture is considered acceptable by potential buyers?

With membranes, this is usually not an issue if the surface has been properly prepared and is not exposed to constant moisture.
