Hello everyone, I want to start a DIY project where I customize furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series. I am especially interested in how to modify these pieces to make them truly unique while keeping them practical. Does anyone have tips or experience with working on Brimnes shelves, dressers, or beds, such as altering surfaces, replacing parts, or adding creative features? I am interested in both simple techniques like painting or using tape, as well as more complex changes like replacing fronts or adding lighting. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

For individual Brimnes projects, I recommend: 1. Sanding and repainting. 2. Installing new handles. 3. Installing LED strips inside. This will immediately give them a more personal touch.

Hellogeleopold8, here is a short tutorial on how to customize Brimnes furniture:

1. Preparation: Fully disassemble the furniture and lightly sand the surfaces. This is important so that paint or adhesive films will adhere better later.

2. Painting: Use acrylic paint or chalk paint for a matte finish. Apply several thin layers and allow each layer to dry thoroughly in between.

3. Replace fronts and handles: Many Brimnes parts have standardized dimensions. Therefore, you can use affordable replacement handles made of metal or wood – this significantly enhances the style.

4. Lighting: LED strips can easily be inserted or glued to the underside. Make sure to use a suitable power supply and plan cable routing carefully.

5. Additional elements: For example, small hooks on the sides or custom-made shelves add more individuality and functionality.

Common mistake: Applying too much paint or repainting too quickly – this causes unsightly drips or bubbles.

That sounds like a really exciting project! I would add some flair to the furniture by covering the fronts not just with paint, but also with leftover wallpaper or unique fabrics – it creates a very individual and cheerful look.

A small tip: before applying, use decoupage varnish to help the material stick well to smooth surfaces and make it more durable.

Also, for a bit of a “wow” effect, you could attach small wooden slats to the headboard of the bed, with indirect lighting installed behind them – it creates a really cozy atmosphere.

Have fun crafting!

I often see the recommendation to install LED lighting. That certainly makes sense, but how practical is it really for everyday use, especially since Ikea furniture isn't designed for complex electrical setups?

I also wonder whether such modifications might affect warranty conditions and how sustainable these changes are if, for example, you want to resell the furniture later.

Regarding surface treatment: Does anyone have experience with how well the melamine-coated surfaces of Brimnes can be sanded, or whether it’s better to use adhesive films as an alternative?

That’s a very good question. In my first attempt, I really focused on keeping the power supply as discreet as possible by using power strips. I avoided permanently soldered or furniture-integrated wiring. This way, I can easily remove the lighting again.

So far, I’ve had difficulties sanding the melamine surfaces completely without damaging the underlying particleboard. A special primer or self-adhesive films seem to be a gentler and visually more appealing solution.
