Hello everyone, I’m preparing for a move and have a problem: How can I transport Ikea Metod cabinets without causing damage? Some of the cabinets are already assembled, but I don’t want to take them apart completely because that would require a lot of time and effort. However, I also don’t want to risk doors or carcasses getting damaged due to shifting during transport. Does anyone have experience with how to best secure and protect these relatively large, fairly flat pieces of furniture? I’m especially interested in tips on padding, fastening, and transporting them in a truck or station wagon. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the tips so far! I have a few follow-up questions: How effective is it to secure doors only with painter’s tape, or is it really better to remove them? Also, is there any experience on how safe this is for short transport distances (within a city)? I have also often read that ratchet straps help, but how can I prevent damage from the straps themselves – for example, leaving indentations? I would appreciate any further advice!

I had to laugh when I read your question – it reminded me of my 'Metod moving adventure'. 😉 Sure, taping doors shut can work, but I wouldn’t want to bet on it. Loosely attached doors caused me some panic moments, so it’s better to remove them and pack them separately. Regarding ratchet straps: just put some old blankets underneath to prevent the straps from bending, and the furniture will still be secured. That way, everything travels much more smoothly!

Doors stay in place with masking tape only for short tripsI can confirm that. Especially if you’re not completely sure during loading that nothing will shift, it’s more relaxed to remove the doors. I’m always a bit worried that even a small bump during transport could cause damage – and that’s when you get most frustrated. I’m definitely keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes well for you!
