Good morning everyone,

I am facing the challenge of safely transporting some IKEA Hemnes furniture from my current apartment to my new one. Specifically, these are Hemnes dressers and a Hemnes desk.

My question is: How can I transport IKEA Hemnes furniture securely so that nothing gets damaged, both while carrying it and during transport in the vehicle? I am thinking about disassembling, packaging, protection against scratches, and preventing breakage of the relatively thin wooden parts.

Are there proven techniques or materials for this? Do I need to completely take the furniture apart, or can some parts safely remain assembled? Also, I am interested in how to minimize the risk of the furniture wobbling or sliding around during transport. I appreciate any tips and experiences!

Good questions! With glass doors, never carry them loosely, as the glass can break or chip if it’s not well protected.

I recommend removing the doors from the furniture as they are (without taking out the glass panes, which are usually firmly glued or clamped in). Wrap the entire door flat in thick blankets. Alternatively, place a layer of cardboard around the door first to prevent crushing, then wrap it in blankets.

Regarding the order: It’s best to first loosen all visible screws and connections on the glass door, then carefully remove the door from the cabinet front. This way, you can better protect the glass and handle the door separately. After that, you can disassemble the rest of the furniture.

One extra tip for transport: Store the doors flat or lean them against a wall with blankets in between, but always ensure they cannot slip.

A brief note on load securing: ratchet straps are essential, especially for Hemnes furniture, because the pieces have very long panels. Without a strap in the trunk, they can easily shift and get damaged.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful information! I have now completely disassembled the furniture, labeled everything, and packed it securely.

One last question: Does anyone have experience using anti-slip mats in a vehicle? Are they sufficient on their own, or should I definitely use ratchet straps as well? Unfortunately, my van doesn’t have built-in tie-down points.

Anti-slip mats are great as they prevent items from sliding on smooth surfaces. However, they do not replace tie-down straps! Especially during braking or sudden movements, the load can still shift. If your van doesn’t have anchor points, it’s advisable to install hooks or eyelets on the walls or use commercially available flexible tie-down systems.

It’s interesting how all tie-down straps are treated with such reverence here. Anti-slip mats provide surprisingly good grip; personally, I prefer elaborate padding and smart stacking. Often, secure transportation fails more due to lack of planning than due to insufficient straps.
