Hello everyone, I have a practical question: How can I transport Billy shelves more easily, especially when I have multiple units or large pieces? I find the parts quite bulky and difficult to handle, particularly when moving them alone or with limited space in the car. Are there specific techniques, tools, or preparations (such as disassembling certain parts) that can make transportation significantly easier? I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Additionally, I would like to share some technical details and practical tips: Billy shelves consist of side panels, shelves, a back panel, and small connecting elements like dowels. The biggest challenge during transport is the bulkiness and weight of the side panels.

1. Disassembly: Remove the shelves and take off the back panel completely (handle carefully to avoid warping). This makes the side panels lighter and flatter.

2. Packaging: Wrap the side panels with furniture blankets or bubble wrap to protect them from scratches.

3. Tools: A furniture dolly or hand truck can be very helpful, especially for moving longer distances from the vehicle to the destination.

4. Number of parts: The more the unit is disassembled, the more pieces need to be securely transported and reassembled. Good organization (labeling, sorting) is crucial here.

5. Load handling: Be careful not to lift the heavy side panels unevenly to avoid back injuries.

How large are the individual parts you need to transport, and how long is the transport distance? Optimal solutions also depend on the specific situation.

Thanks for the details! The side panels are about 80 cm (31 inches) wide and 202 cm (79 inches) tall, so they’re quite bulky. I plan to transport them individually or at most as half a shelf unit. The transport distance is around 15 km (9 miles), mostly by station wagon, so not extremely far, but it involves narrow parking garages and some stairs at home. That’s why I’m also looking for advice on how to make handling in the vehicle and carrying them easier.

Well then, there’s only one solution: pack blankets and straps! 🙂

When I handle shelves like these, I wrap the individual side panels in thick blankets to get a better grip and prevent them from slipping. It gets even easier if you place the parts on a small furniture dolly or hand truck – a real game changer, especially for stairwells, since carrying heavy loads repeatedly can really take its toll.

Also, when loading into the car, position the base surfaces downwards to keep them from tipping over. Secure everything with straps to prevent shifting and protect the surface from damage. A quick tip: having a second person helps a lot when loading, but if you’re on your own, using a hand truck is still doable.
