I plan to convert my Ikea Besta shelving unit into a custom wine rack and am looking for constructive suggestions and experiences on how to best adapt the furniture. Specifically, I am interested in: How can the compartment layout be modified to store wine bottles safely and free from dust? Which materials and/or additional components would you recommend to enhance stability and functionality? Are there any tips for ventilation or visual improvements to make the whole setup look high-quality and coherent? A practical guide or implementation advice would be great, especially considering that the Besta system was not originally designed for wine storage.

Basically: Is the Besta really the best base furniture for wine storage considering its material thickness and load capacity? A wine rack requires specific structural conditions due to the weight and shape of the bottles. The system is designed more for storage space than for wine bottle storage. I would first check whether the support surfaces are stable enough and minimize vibrations.

Regarding dust protection: Are there doors or covers planned? Otherwise, I would suggest aluminum profiles or glass fronts to keep dust out and make the bottles visible.

Air circulation should also be considered carefully, as Besta has closed modules without ventilation. Controlled humidity is important for wine, and rigid furniture like Besta could make this more difficult.

That’s true, and honestly, I had some concerns myself when I experimented with a similar shelving unit. You can of course reduce condensation inside by adding small ventilation slots or using a dehumidifier nearby. Of course, this is a compromise and requires some attention.

However, I think it’s doable if you don’t need to store the bottles for many years. For smaller collections that are rotated regularly, Besta works well. The main challenge is actually creating suitable shelves or holders to prevent bottles from shifting or breaking.

The best way to convert a Besta into a wine rack is to use wooden slats or metal rods placed horizontally as bottle holders. The spacing should match the width of the bottles. Additionally, install doors or transparent fronts.

Avoid making it too deep to ensure the bottles rest securely.

For the Besta system, a suitable additional material is sturdy beech plywood for shelves, which can enhance load-bearing capacity. These can be cut to the appropriate thickness and offer axial stability.

I also recommend using metal bottle holders or wooden strips with side support to prevent bottles from rolling or wobbling.

For practical use, a combination of glass doors with rubber seals is suitable to protect against dust while maintaining an attractive appearance.

The stability of the furniture itself can be increased by adding internal braces to evenly distribute the weight of the bottles. This is especially important when storing several dozen bottles.

I find the project really exciting! The Besta system offers so many possibilities, especially because the modules are so flexible. Just add some cool wine racks, like wooden slats mounted at an angle, and enhance the whole thing with indirect LED lighting – it almost feels like a small wine cellar. 😊

I’m also dealing with the issue of humidity – maybe add some small ventilation slots and pay attention to room temperature. You definitely don’t want to risk a champagne disaster! But the DIY touch you’re putting into it definitely makes it something special.
