ᐅ How can I tell if my IKEA Metod cabinet doors are properly aligned?

Hello everyone,

I recently installed an IKEA Metod cabinet and am now adjusting the doors. I have a specific question: how can I tell if my Metod cabinet doors are properly aligned?

I want to avoid them hanging crooked, not closing properly, or having uneven gaps. Are there specific signs or procedures I should look for to ensure the doors are perfectly adjusted?

I have already tried the adjustment options on the hinges but am unsure how precise the final result should be.

I would really appreciate any practical tips or tricks you could share!

If a door hits the cabinet frame, adjusting the depth often helps.

This sounds exactly like my problem. The left door lightly hits the cabinet frame, probably because it sticks out too far. Is there a recommendation on which screw I should start adjusting?

And how can I avoid changing the gap dimensions again by doing this?

I'm a bit cautious about the material thickness and want to avoid damaging or permanently misaligning the doors if possible.

First of all: The depth adjustment is usually the screw located towards the back of the hinges, which moves the door closer to or further away from the cabinet (carcass).

My recommendation:

- Start with the depth adjustment on the door that contacts the cabinet. Turn the screw gradually to bring the door closer to the cabinet.
- After each small adjustment, check whether the contact still occurs and if the door still aligns evenly with the other door.
- After adjusting the depth, the gap between the doors may shift slightly. If this happens, you can correct it by using the horizontal adjustment (usually the screw at the front of the hinge).

Important: Work in small increments, such as quarter turns or smaller. Adjusting too much might cause the door to stick or not close properly.

In summary: Adjust the depth first for cabinet contact, then use horizontal adjustment to balance the gap.

Thank you for the advice! I will definitely follow that.

One more question: What if, after multiple adjustments and checks, the doors still appear slightly misaligned? Could this be due to incorrect hinge installation, or are there known tolerances with Metod that need to be accepted?

This is an important question. The Metod series from IKEA is generally precise, but there are indeed some manufacturing tolerances.

Incorrect installation is often the cause when the doors are not aligned:

- The screws for the hinges should be placed exactly in the designated positions; even the screws on the hinges themselves can shift.

- Pay close attention to positioning the hinges precisely on the pre-drilled holes – if one side is slightly offset, it can significantly affect the alignment.

- Sometimes it helps to loosen all the screws, adjust the doors, and then tighten everything step by step.

- Hinges can also be slightly damaged or warped; in that case, replace them.

Small tolerances of about 1–2 mm (0.04–0.08 inches) are often unavoidable, but anything larger should not occur.

Do you have the option to remove the hinges and reposition them? Or have you used a level to measure the deviation accurately?

If doors rub when closing, check the hinges and adjust the depth if necessary.

Also important: Doors should not contact the frame when closed, except on the hinge side.

I would also recommend not using force when closing. If a door does not operate smoothly, the adjustment screw is often incorrect.

I think it’s important to mention that when adjusting, you should also fully open and close the doors to check the functionality of the soft-close dampers.

When the doors are properly adjusted, they close smoothly without sticking, and the soft-close feature ensures a fluid and almost silent closing.

In my opinion, this is a good practical indicator that the doors are correctly set.
