Hello everyone,

I have a question about the aftercare and protection of Ikea Metod kitchen fronts. These are typically made of coated chipboard or MDF and are quite susceptible to scratches, dirt, and moisture. During regular kitchen use, I would like to make the surface as resistant as possible without affecting the appearance or texture.

Has anyone had experience with protecting Ikea Metod kitchen fronts after installation? Which methods or products (paint, oil, special sealants) work well for this purpose without altering the surface’s gloss or color, for example?

I also want to avoid discoloration or, in the worst case, damage caused by improper treatment. Are there any proven practical tips or recommendations to extend the lifespan of these fronts?

Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

I simply use furniture care spray on my Metod fronts, which is completely sufficient.

It’s quick to do, reduces dust and dirt, and offers minimal protection. For me, it requires no effort and looks good.

Interesting, did you sand the cabinet fronts beforehand or apply the clear lacquer directly onto the already smooth surface?

Because without sanding, the paint layer might not adhere very well. But if you sand, you might damage the surface.

I gently roughed up the surface with very fine abrasive pads; that’s completely sufficient. Just very lightly to ensure the finish adheres properly. Sanding too aggressively can cause damage. After that, clean thoroughly and apply the clear coat in several thin layers. This way it holds very well and looks really good afterward.
