I have a problem with my IKEA Billy bookcases, which become unstable over time due to slight warping. This especially affects the tall and wide models. The back panel alone does not seem sufficient to maintain stability in the long term, particularly when the shelves are heavily loaded.
Therefore, I would like to know: How can I effectively stabilize Billy bookcases against warping without having to completely rebuild or heavily modify them? Are there any proven tips or methods that have been particularly effective in preventing or significantly reducing the typical distortions?

1. Reinforce the back panel: The thin MDF back panel of BILLY helps prevent wobbling, but it is not very stable against warping. You can cut a 4 mm (0.16 inch) plywood sheet and screw it onto the back panel. This increases stability and prevents twisting.
2. Use metal brackets: As already mentioned, brackets on the edges help. Make sure to install them both at the top and bottom.
3. Add cross braces: Some people install two or three short battens across the back panel, screwed into the side walls. This provides additional stiffness to the frame.
4. Attach to the wall: Very important for stability is securing the unit to the wall with the supplied brackets. Especially tall shelves should always be fixed.
5. Consider the load: Do not overload the shelf. These shelves are designed for moderate loads.
In summary: Replace or reinforce the back panel, install brackets, add cross braces, and always secure to the wall. These are well-proven measures.
If you do not want to change the materials, then installing metal brackets and fixing the unit to the wall is the bare minimum.
