Hello everyone,
I have some BILLY shelves from IKEA at home and want to set them up securely on carpeted floors. Since the floor is softer compared to, for example, hardwood or tile, I’m concerned that the shelves might not be stable enough or could easily tip over when loaded or when pulling items out or putting them in.
Are there specific measures or accessories to improve the stability of BILLY shelves on carpeted floors? I’m thinking of solutions like additional feet, plates, spacers, or other techniques that might help. Experiences with securing them to the wall in such cases would also be useful.
What tips do you generally have to prevent BILLY shelves from wobbling or tipping on carpeted floors? Thanks for your help!

Hello otto57,
As mentioned earlier, securing the shelving unit to the wall is crucial when placing BILLY bookcases on carpet. Here is a brief outline with some tips:
1. Cut a wooden base plate slightly larger than the feet. Material: about 1 cm MDF or plywood (approximately 0.4 inches)
2. Place this plate under the shelf using high-quality double-sided tape or loosely—do not screw anything directly into the carpet
3. This increases the surface area in contact with the floor and reduces pressure on the carpet
4. Attach wall brackets to the upper back of the shelving unit—suitable sets are available from IKEA
5. Use wall anchors appropriate for the wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall) and tighten the screws securely
6. Make sure the base plate is stable and the shelf stands level
Common mistakes:
- No base plate: The furniture sinks into the carpet due to too small a contact area
- No wall attachment: The shelf tips over despite stable footing
- Uneven loading: Place books closer to the wall to minimize leverage forces
I hope this helps.
