ᐅ How can I stabilize Billy shelves if they wobble?

Hello everyone,

I have several Billy bookcases at home, which unfortunately can sometimes be a bit wobbly, especially when handling them roughly or pulling on them. I have already checked that all the screws are properly tightened, but the problem remains. I understand that the Billy bookcase is not a solid wood cabinet, but I want to avoid it becoming completely unstable or damaged.

My question to you is: How can I stabilize my Billy bookcases if they wobble? Are there any proven tips or simple methods that can be used without having to completely rebuild the structure? Is there perhaps even a way to improve stability using common tools or materials?

I look forward to your advice and experiences!

Hello Milelis,

I would like to add to the previous tips that with my Billy shelf, the stability mainly comes from securing it to the wall.

I make a habit of always using these brackets, even if I have to rearrange the space a bit to do so. For wobbly shelves, I have sometimes also reinforced them from the inside with small brackets – these are hardly visible but make a big difference.

Additionally, as minjan mentioned, you can place some shims under the feet to prevent rocking caused by uneven floors.

And if you have pets or children, reducing the load on the upper shelves can also improve stability.

Best regards

Thanks in advance for your detailed answers! I actually haven’t secured the shelf to the wall yet – I hadn’t realized with the wall unit that it was absolutely necessary.

Uneven flooring might also be a factor since I have laminate that is slightly wavy in some spots.

@pauPierce: Yes, I also have the impression that the back panel is a bit loose; it’s only attached with small nails. I’ll probably need to reinforce or adjust the nails there.

@Sepele and @manla: Thanks for the clear explanations. I’ll first check all the screws again and also install the wall fasteners. Are there specific screws or anchors that work better for wood or drywall partitions?

I’m asking because right next to my apartment I have a drywall partition and not a solid brick or concrete wall.

Looking forward to your advice!

For drywall holes, special hollow wall anchors or toggle bolts are recommended. Standard anchors usually do not hold well in drywall.

Regarding milelis’s question about anchors:

For drywall, you should use toggle bolts or spring toggle anchors. These expand behind the drywall and hold better than simple expansion anchors. This is important because secure fastening is essential for heavy furniture like shelving units.

For wooden walls or studs, you can alternatively screw directly into the wood, which provides a strong hold and does not require anchors.

One more tip: If you are unsure, first test with a small screw to see if the anchor holds before mounting the shelf.

Good luck with your installation!

Hey Milelis! 🙂

I can only confirm that wall mounting is absolutely essential for the Billy bookshelf. Without it, stability is almost impossible.

To prevent wobbling on uneven floors, I like to use small self-adhesive rubber pads – they are virtually invisible and work really well.

If the shelf still wobbles despite these measures, it’s possible to add extra brackets or metal connectors inside, either on the sides or underneath.

I highly recommend that! I once screwed in a few small metal brackets inside a Billy as extra braces. It stabilized the whole thing really well – without significantly affecting the appearance.

Go for it, it’s definitely doable! 😉

Good morning,

A smart approach to also consider the stability of the back panel. The thin back panel is the most important part that prevents the furniture from wobbling sideways.

I always check new Billy shelves before assembly to ensure the back panel is exactly flat and even. If it is not fitted properly, everything will wobble later.

During installation, be sure to tension the back panel so that it fits correctly.

Once the back panel and wall fixing are properly in place, the shelves become very sturdy.
