I recently bought several Billy bookcases from IKEA and was wondering if there are effective ways to speed up their assembly. I am particularly interested in how to reduce the assembly time without compromising the stability or proper alignment of the shelves.
While I do have experience with furniture assembly, I would like to become more efficient—there might be tried and tested tips or tricks beyond the included instructions.
I usually assemble the furniture alone and am wondering if it’s advisable to approach certain steps differently or if any special tools are recommended to complete the job faster.
Who among you has practical experience assembling Billy bookcases and can share insights to help me significantly cut down my assembly time? Thanks in advance!

Hello maumladen,
you’ve asked a really practical question! 🙂
My tip right away: grab a cordless drill! It saves a lot of time and frustration compared to using a screwdriver.
I also find it helpful to lay out all the parts beforehand and double-check that everything is there – this avoids annoying searching during assembly.
Regarding screw torque: don’t tighten all the screws fully right away. Instead, start by screwing them in loosely, and tighten them all at the end. This makes it easier to align the individual components.
If you’re assembling the cabinet alone, build it on the floor. It’s faster and more stable. Good luck! 😉

To speed up the construction process, I recommend additional preparation and optimization of your tools. A cordless drill with a depth stop can ensure the optimal screw depth without damaging the components.
Additionally, a small magnetic screwdriver bit can be helpful for quickly picking up and positioning screws.
Another point: sorting screws and wooden parts right before starting, preferably on a large table or workbench, helps keep everything organized and avoids unnecessary trips.

Sort components according to construction phase.
Start screws lightly, then tighten them later.
Assemble the cabinet body lying down.

A precise working method is crucial to reduce assembly times on short notice.
Here are some clear recommendations based on experience:
1. Use a cordless screwdriver, preferably with torque adjustment.
2. Sort all parts completely according to the instructions before assembly.
3. Read the assembly manual carefully to anticipate complicated sections.
4. Follow the sequence: first loosely fit all screws, then align everything, and finally tighten all screws securely.
These steps minimize errors, and reassembling once can cut the overall build time in half.
