Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Malm chest of drawers from IKEA and now want to make sure the drawers are securely locked to prevent them from being pulled out unintentionally—especially with young children in the house.

My question is: What are the best ways to permanently and effectively secure Malm drawers without having to constantly install something that might leave residue or damage the appearance later on?

I would appreciate concrete recommendations and experiences, including tips on suitable materials or specific locking systems. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

I would like to go into more detail on this topic, as I have spent quite some time searching for the best solution myself.

Basically, there are two types of locks: mechanical systems that are installed inside (such as bolts or latch bars), and magnetic locks that often operate with a key or magnetic tool.

Mechanical bolts are usually sturdy but may require some tools for installation. Magnetic locks, on the other hand, are convenient because they are discreet and do not leave visible changes on the dresser.

The stability of the drawers themselves is also important. If the drawer slides already have some play, certain locks may be less effective.

Personally, I think it’s always important to consider how often and how easily you want to open the drawers, as locks that are too strong can become annoying in everyday use.

I hope this helps as an overview!

I use these clamp locks for Malm that attach to the sides of the drawers. They are invisible, lock securely, and can be released without much effort.

I can highly recommend them.

Thank you for the responses so far!

I have a quick follow-up question: Are magnetic locks truly reliable enough that you don’t have to worry if a toddler pulls on the dresser?

Additionally, I’m interested to know if there are any experiences regarding how these locks affect the drawer slides—specifically, whether the drawers remain easy to open and if the mechanism stays undamaged.

Magnetic locks are good for keeping curious children away, but they are not very strong when significant force is applied. I would prefer mechanical latches in that case.

As long as the locks are installed correctly, they do not affect the smooth operation. Just make sure to use only as much adhesive or screws as needed to avoid any damage.

If safety is the top priority, then go for mechanically secure solutions! Magnets can be pried open.

In my case, everything has remained smooth and easy to operate, even with mechanical latches. Just install them carefully and make sure not to block the drawer slides.

Hey, your tips are great! 😃

I equipped my MALM drawers with flexible child safety locks that can be installed discreetly on the inside. They are practically invisible but still very effective.

The installation is straightforward, and despite the locks, the drawers remain easy to open.

A little tip: use elastic bands stretched over the drawer – it’s simple, keeps children out, and doesn’t cause any damage! Good luck!
