Hello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question regarding my IKEA Malm chest of drawers. I’ve noticed that the drawers sometimes shift slightly or rattle, which can be quite annoying when opening and closing them. I am looking for a reliable way to secure the drawers firmly without affecting the functionality of the drawer slides or the way they pull out. It’s important to me that the solution is reversible in case I want to use the chest differently in the future. Does anyone have experience with tricks or special tools to fix Malm drawers securely and stably? Thanks in advance!

Hello Anatol55, let me see if I can help you!

There are several effective methods to securely fix a Malm drawer. First, it’s important to understand that the system operates on wooden runners with rollers and requires some clearance, so you shouldn’t fix it too tightly or in unusual spots.

1. Anti-slip pads: These small rubber pads can be glued to the inside of the drawer runners. They increase friction and prevent annoying rattling.

2. Clamping strips or small wooden strips: Some people cut small wooden strips to size and screw them inside to reduce the clearance without causing the drawer to stick.

3. Magnetic catches: There are small magnetic catches that can be attached on the inside sides. These gently hold the drawer in place.

4. Felt tape: Felt strips on contact surfaces can minimize noise and provide light resistance to better secure the drawer.

Common mistakes: Please avoid using adhesive tape or simply sticking things on the outside of the drawer, as this can interfere with function and damage the material.

Summary: The best solutions are flexible, non-residual aids like rubber pads or magnetic catches. If you want, I can give you exact sources or provide a step-by-step guide.

That’s a very good idea.

If I were you, I would also check if the guide rails are loose. If so, tighten the screws.

Hey Anatol55, I can only recommend from my own experience to pull the drawer all the way out and thoroughly clean all the sliding tracks – sometimes dirt gets caught in there and causes that annoying rattling.

After that, apply a small amount of furniture wax or silicone spray to the runners; this makes the glide smooth and reduces noise from play. Don’t worry, the product can be easily removed if you want to try something else later.

To secure it: I once attached small strips of hook-and-loop tape (Velcro) on the sides. It holds the drawer well without gluing, can be easily removed, and also gives the wooden frame some extra support.

Give it a try, you don’t need much tool and it’s quick 🙂 Good luck!

Hello Anatol55, I’m joining the conversation here because this topic interests me as well.

Regarding your question about how to securely fix Malm drawers, there is a fairly practical method that I have used several times:

- Step 1: Remove the drawer and check if the runner rails are properly seated. Sometimes the screws are loose here, which directly causes wobbling.

- Step 2: If the drawer runner has some play, you can place thin washers behind the screws to reduce the movement.

- Step 3: For a permanent fixation without limiting the function, I recommend self-adhesive rubber bumpers (like those used for furniture). Place them in such a way that the drawer is gently pressed when closing.

- Step 4: As an alternative to magnets, which you mentioned, there are special plastic clips that can be attached to the sides – these hold well but can still be removed.

A common mistake I often see is that people fix the drawer with strong adhesive tape on the outside, which can damage the wood over time.

So it’s important to find a solution that is reversible and gentle on the material. Hope this helps!

The last sentence hits the mark exactly – that’s always what I have paid attention to as well.
