Hello everyone, I recently purchased some MALM furniture from IKEA, which I find appealing in both design and functionality. However, I am concerned about stability, especially in households with small children or pets. My specific question is: How can I secure MALM furniture to prevent tipping, so that it remains stable under load or when drawers are opened, posing no risk? Are there proven methods, practical safety systems, or special precautions when handling this furniture to sustainably reduce the risk of tipping? I would greatly appreciate detailed tips or experiences.

To secure MALM furniture against tipping, I always recommend starting with the wall-attachment kits provided by the manufacturer. These are specifically designed to firmly fix the furniture and prevent accidents.

In addition to wall attachments, you can use furniture glides or non-slip pads under the legs to improve grip on smooth floors.

It is also advisable to store the heaviest items as low and close to the wall as possible to keep the center of gravity low. For rooms with children, I additionally recommend using safety locks on drawers to prevent them from being opened unintentionally, which could cause the furniture to tip over.

It’s great to see such a specific question about MALM fasteners here! 🙂 I used IKEA wall anchors for ours—they’re really easy to install and hold very securely.

What also helps a lot: a few non-slip felt pads or special anti-slip mats under the furniture legs. This provides extra grip and makes the whole setup much safer.

And very important: always make sure the furniture is attached to solid walls, preferably combined with child safety locks for the drawers. That way, your MALM will stand firm like a rock, and nothing will happen! 🙂

Simply attach the supplied wall brackets. Never fully extend the drawers. Store heavy items at the bottom. Done.

Hello Rulukman, it’s good that you take safety seriously. Most MALM dressers include a wall-anchoring solution that you should definitely use. Many IKEA furniture pieces can tip over easily if pulled out too far or loaded unevenly.

You should not ignore this.

Also, choosing the right anchors is crucial – plugs and screws must be suitable for the wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall). For drywall, I would recommend special cavity anchors or metal toggles.

That’s true, but don’t underestimate wall preparation. A solid fix provides a lot of safety.

Additionally: If you have small children, make sure the furniture can’t be used as a climbing aid. Extra locks for drawers can be useful.

I can completely understand your concerns about the risk of furniture tipping, especially with small children at home.

I also spent a long time looking for safe solutions and relied on feedback from other families. What worked well for me was combining wall anchors with drawer locks and non-slip pads.

The feeling that the wardrobe is secure really brings more peace of mind. However, it can still feel a bit uneasy when children are nearby – what has been your experience? Has it worked smoothly for everyone, or have there been any incidents despite the safety measures?
