Hello everyone, I recently bought and assembled several IKEA PAX wardrobes. Since these wardrobes are tall and heavy, I am concerned about safety, especially regarding the risk of them tipping over, for example during earthquakes or accidental bumps, particularly with children in the household. My specific question is: What options are available to securely anchor IKEA PAX wardrobes to prevent tipping? I am looking for recommendations on suitable fasteners as well as tips on correct installation and attachment points (wall types, etc.). It would also be helpful if anyone could share their personal experience on the best way to implement this, to ensure the wardrobes remain stable over time without causing damage to the walls. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Hello Bauna, your question is very important, especially if there are children in the household, as a tipping PAX can be really dangerous. IKEA itself generally recommends always securing the wardrobes to the wall because otherwise, they pose a tipping hazard.

The usual method is to use so-called anti-tip kits, which are often included or can be purchased separately. These typically consist of metal brackets and screws that are attached to the top of the wardrobe and then anchored into the wall. It is important to adapt the wall plugs to the specific type of wall: for concrete or brick walls, expansion anchors are commonly used, while for drywall there are special cavity anchors.

I would recommend attaching the top brackets at at least two fixed points, as this provides the highest stability. If you have children, regularly check that the screws remain tight, as the stress on them can increase. If you have any special conditions, like sloping ceilings or very tall wardrobes, just get in touch again and we can address it in more detail.

Hello Bauna, to reliably ensure protection against tipping with PAX wardrobe systems, it is important to carefully consider a few details.

First, you should know that the anti-tip measures supplied by IKEA often only cover the basics. To securely install the wardrobe for the long term, I recommend the following approach:

- Selection of wall plugs: Determine exactly what material your wall is made of. For solid walls (concrete, masonry), use anchors with the appropriate load capacity, such as heavy-duty anchors. For hollow walls like drywall (gypsum board), metal anchors or toggle bolts are essential.

- Attachment points: If possible, fix the anti-tip device to load-bearing parts of the wardrobe at the upper right and left to prevent twisting. Ideally, secure it to the sturdy side panels of the wardrobe.

- Fasteners: Use stainless steel screws that won’t rust if there is moisture in the room.

- Load testing: After installation, gently apply pressure to test if there is any movement in the wardrobe; there should be minimal play, but no tipping motion.

- Caution: If you place several wardrobes side by side, connection fittings between the units can help stabilize the entire structure against tipping.

Could you also let me know if your wall is rather dry or damp, and whether the floor is level? This information will help determine the appropriate fasteners.

My wall is a simple brick wall with plaster. The floor is quite level and made of laminate. The room is not damp, so it is normally dry.

I had planned to secure the cabinets with the original IKEA anti-tip brackets but wasn’t sure if they would be sufficient. How secure are they in your experience?

I have two large PAX wardrobes set up side by side, and this idea of connecting them sounds very sensible. What is the best way to do this, and are there special connectors for that?

I would appreciate any additional tips you can share.

Original tilt locks from IKEA are sufficient if installed correctly. Use screws in solid bricks with appropriate wall plugs, securing each cabinet at least at two points. You can easily create connecting elements using small brackets and screws.

For safety when securing IKEA PAX cabinets against tipping:

- The original anti-tip device is structurally sufficient if mounted on sufficiently strong points.
- Brick walls require expansion anchors with adequate load capacity (at least 8mm diameter, length 50mm (2 inches) or longer depending on wall thickness).
- Installation height: attach the brackets as high as possible on the cabinet to minimize leverage forces.
- Connecting cabinets placed side by side adds stability and reduces the risk of tipping under load.
- Materials: use galvanized or stainless steel screws to prevent corrosion, ensuring long-term stability.

If different wall materials are present, have them checked by a structural engineer if necessary. In most cases, suitable anchors and screws with secure attachment are sufficient.

On request, I can provide a list of recommended anchor and screw types.
