Hello everyone,

I am planning to move next month and intend to take my IKEA Metod kitchen units with me. Since these are fairly sturdy but quite bulky pieces, I want to make sure they don’t get damaged during transport.

My question is: How can I safely transport IKEA Metod kitchen units during a move?
What preparations are recommended to avoid scratches, breakage, or deformations? Are there any specific techniques or packing materials that have proven to be especially effective?

I would appreciate any tips on disassembly, padding, and loading, especially since I experienced in my last move that kitchen units can easily suffer damage if they’re not properly secured.

What loading method would you recommend? Wrapping all parts in bubble wrap first and then securing them immediately with straps? Or wrapping tightly first and then securing? How close should the parts be positioned?

An excellent question!
Basically, I recommend the following approach:

- First, wrap everything that can be padded thoroughly with bubble wrap or moving blankets. This creates a protective layer that cushions impacts.
- The wrapping should not be too tight to avoid surface tension and pressure marks. Slightly loose but secure.
- After wrapping, position the parts loosely in the vehicle—ideally so they do not touch each other. A gap of a few centimeters (inches) is good.
- Then secure them with straps without deforming the parts. The straps should hold the items firmly but not squeeze them.
- It is important not to store the items too tightly or too loosely—too tight can cause pressure marks, too much movement causes scratches.

It can also be helpful to prepare a loading plan in advance, where you note exactly which parts are loaded in which order. Do you have experience using straps, or would you prefer to use other securing methods?

That sounds very useful. I have never made a loading plan before, but it seems especially helpful when dealing with many parts.

I only have basic experience with using tie-down straps, mainly from transporting furniture without disassembling it.

Is there anything to consider when fastening the straps to avoid damaging the furniture fronts and edges? Should I use edge protectors or something similar?

Yes, definitely use edge protectors to prevent pressure marks.

Edge protectors made of foam or rubber stop the straps from pressing directly on the wood, which can cause visible damage.

Also, make sure to tighten the straps so that the parts are securely fastened but not crushed or deformed.

The straps should always run parallel to the load and not be pulled at an angle to avoid uneven stress.

I’m glad to see how thoroughly you’re getting involved, Henny!

I’d like to add that, for safety, you should also watch out for any deformations to the furniture itself during transport. It helps to gently press against the pieces occasionally while loading to ensure nothing is loose.

Don’t forget to schedule enough breaks during transfers and the trip to calmly check the fastenings. Moving can be stressful, but especially with a kitchen, it’s worth staying calm.

Fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly!
