Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Besta system to store various items. My question is specifically about safely storing heavy objects—such as TVs, heavy books, or larger decorative pieces.

I understand that the Besta units are made of particle board, which can bend or even get damaged quickly under excessive weight. I’m also concerned about overall stability when storing heavy loads over a longer period, especially if the cabinets are not secured to the wall.

Are there particular tips, materials, or reinforcements you would recommend? Should individual shelves be reinforced, or is it better to place heavy items at the bottom of the cabinets?

Any advice on securely anchoring the entire Besta system to the wall to prevent tipping would also be appreciated.

I completely understand, as I was also worried that heavy items might damage the Besta shelves. To address this, I reinforced the shelves by adding a thin multiplex plywood board. Multiplex plywood is a bit stronger than the original particleboard and distributes the weight more evenly.

The system should always be secured to the wall, especially for the reason that it can tip over, particularly when heavy items are stored on top. This makes me feel much safer overall.

Personally, I always stored heavy items at the bottom because it not only improves stability but also makes access easier. In the end, it’s more practical and helps protect the furniture.

According to the manufacturer, the maximum load capacity of a shelf usually ranges between 10 and 15 kilograms (22 to 33 pounds), depending on the shelf and its design. To safely store heavy items, I recommend the following points:

- Always place heavy items on the lower shelves to keep the center of gravity low and avoid tipping.
- Use additional base plates made of wood or metal placed under the shelf to better distribute the weight.
- Reinforce the shelves with special shelf brackets or by inserting custom-sized panels made of plywood or MDF.
- Securely fix the entire system to the wall using appropriate anchors and screws – this is essential to prevent tipping.
- If you have very heavy loads, I suggest considering the use of heavy-duty shelving, as Besta is primarily a residential furniture system, not an industrial shelf.

If you have the Besta system with glass sliding doors or similar attachments, make sure to also observe the maximum load capacity, as these affect the overall structure.
