Hello everyone, I would like to set up Billy shelves from Ikea without the back panel, but I am concerned about stability and safety, especially since I plan to use the shelves in a hallway where they cannot be screwed to the wall. My question is: How can I arrange Billy shelves without the back panel to ensure they are stable and resistant to tipping over? Are there specific methods, materials, or additional parts I can use to guarantee firm stability? I would appreciate any experiences and concrete tips.

Therefore, it is advisable to install sturdy metal corner or L-brackets and secure the shelves together. While attachment to the wall is not preferred, it is also possible to screw brackets to the ceiling or floor as an alternative. The main goal is to prevent tipping.
For choosing brackets, I recommend steel brackets of at least 70x70x3 mm (2.8x2.8x0.12 inches), which can be fastened to the shelf frame using wood screws. For floor fixing, non-slip felt or rubber pads are advisable to ensure not only stability but also floor protection.

Connect metal angle brackets laterally or from above Exactly, that connects the individual parts and stabilizes the structure. I would also recommend securing the shelf to the ceiling with L-shaped metal brackets if wall mounting is not possible.

weighted down at the bottom with heavy objects That’s a good tip to keep the center of gravity low. This significantly reduces the risk of tipping over.
