Hello everyone, I am planning to move soon and want to carefully disassemble my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets without causing damage. My goal is to take all parts apart in a way that allows them to be reassembled later easily and without any material loss. I am especially interested in safe handling tips for the fittings and how to avoid broken dowels or damaged cabinet components. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on a systematic approach for disassembly, the best tools to use, and common mistakes to avoid? Thanks in advance for your detailed advice!

When disassembling Ikea Metod cabinets, there are several important points to keep in mind:

- First, I recommend removing all cabinet doors by unscrewing the metal hinges. This will make handling much easier later on.
- Remove shelves before taking the cabinet apart to reduce unnecessary weight.
- In terms of tools, ideally use a Phillips screwdriver (PH2), and possibly a cordless drill with a narrow bit to carefully unscrew fasteners.
- Be sure not to apply too much or too little force to avoid damaging screws and dowels.
- For snap-fit connectors (metal or plastic fasteners), it’s advisable to carefully loosen them with a slim screwdriver instead of pulling.
- If possible, document the position of all connectors to make reassembly easier later.

Avoid mistakes such as breaking out dowels or roughly pulling on the particleboard.

I completely agree, but honestly: Ikea furniture is often designed to promote quick assembly rather than disassembly. From my perspective, the main weak point remains durability during moving. This clearly reflects the throwaway mentality of some manufacturers. If you are not extremely careful, you risk damaging the case parts. Perhaps it would be better to consider modular transport containers or protective devices rather than just focusing on the disassembly process!

Thanks for the helpful information so far! To be a bit more specific: Are there any common weak points in the Metod series at the connection points or particular screws/connectors where breakage tends to occur more frequently? I have read that the so-called cam connectors can sometimes be problematic, but I consider myself somewhat experienced with DIY and would like to avoid common pitfalls.

Hey mikopar, I have moved my Metod cabinets twice already and can tell you: Definitely disassemble the large components first (carcass, doors, back panels) and then protect them properly with blankets or bubble wrap! The cam connectors have never caused me any problems if you carefully open them with a screwdriver – it works great. It’s important to do everything systematically and not try to force parts apart. It’s also best to sort and label all screws and connectors in small bags so nothing gets lost during reassembly! Keep it up, you’ve got this!

I would say the back panel of the cabinet is usually the most delicate part. It is often attached only with small nails, which can easily pull out or break if handled improperly. If you gently pry it using your hand or a flat tool, you can avoid damage. My advice is to carefully detach the back panel and possibly protect it during the moving process with new tape or thin cardboard. This will help maintain stability during transport.
