Hello everyone, I am about to move and want to carefully and completely disassemble my Ikea Metod cabinets so I can easily reassemble them in the new home. It is important to me that all parts – from the carcass to the doors and fittings – are taken apart properly without damaging any furniture components. Does anyone have experience with the best way to do this? Are there any special tools or tips to avoid losing screws and to keep the mounting strips, handles, etc. safe? I would also like to know if there is a recommended order for disassembly to prevent damage. I appreciate any advice that can help me plan confidently!

I went through a similar relocation with Metod cabinets about six months ago, and I know exactly how important this is. What helped me was patience and a well-organized approach. It’s best to create a system using felt-tip markers or small stickers to sort screws and fittings. I put each screw into small bags and labeled them according to the cabinet part.

Be especially careful with the hinges, as they tend to break easily. It’s also better to remove the doors first, then the shelves, and only after that the cabinet frame. If you still have the original assembly instructions, it’s worth going through them to understand which parts need to be removed first.

It’s tiring, yes, but manageable. Sometimes I wasn’t even sure if I was doing it right, but with calmness and a step-by-step approach, it all worked out well.

For a structured and complete disassembly of Ikea Metod cabinets, the recommended procedure is as follows:

- First, remove the doors. These are usually attached with quick-release fasteners that are fairly easy to detach.
- Next, take out all shelves and drawers.
- Unscrew handles, trims, and accessories, and store them separately in a safe place.
- Then, disassemble the cabinet carcasses by working from top to bottom.
- For screws, it is advisable to use labeled containers to ensure correct part identification during reassembly.

In terms of tools, a Phillips screwdriver or a cordless drill with the appropriate bit is usually sufficient.

It is important to store the cabinets as vertically as possible to avoid deformation. Handle delicate parts like hinges carefully to preserve their functionality.

I can only agree with that; it’s truly invaluable. I’ll add a few practical tips from my own experience:

- Use as small as possible sealable boxes or zip bags for screws, clearly labeled.
- The original drill holes in the carcass often confirm the assembly order – sometimes it’s helpful to take a photo of undamaged cabinets beforehand.
- To minimize damage: place a blanket under the carcass during disassembly to prevent scratches.
- It’s best to note each step of the dismantling process with a smartphone or paper in case you get stuck at certain points.
- Remove sensitive fittings (e.g., dampers) and store them safely and separately.

With some preparation, the process usually runs smoothly.

I want to offer a critical perspective: Many say the system is relatively easy to dismantle. That is true to some extent. However, I strongly recommend not dismantling it randomly from top to bottom.

There are connections between the side panels and the base, secured by special cam fittings. If these are removed in an uncoordinated way, the frame can become unstable and parts may get damaged.

My advice:
- Carefully examine the construction method of your specific model (Metod had different connection systems depending on the year of manufacture).
- Make a list of the fasteners and the order in which they should be removed.
- Work with proven care and, if possible, with a second person to ensure stability.

Relying solely on the instructions is sometimes not enough. Direct experience and close attention to both dismantling steps and safety are essential.

I can completely understand that—I also underestimated it the first time and was quite nervous. What helped me was actually opening everything up first and carefully examining each type of connection. Many things look chaotic at first, but there is a logic behind them.

One more tip: Sometimes it’s worth gently opening the hinge to see how it works before removing it. This can help you avoid mistakes and prevent damage that may occur if you apply too much force in one spot.

And as FLONE41 already said: Take your time and be patient. It’s okay to take breaks in between. This also helps your mind coordinate everything properly.
