Hello everyone, I am looking for a way to retrofit my IKEA Metod kitchen drawers with an automatic soft-close mechanism. The drawers I have are the standard version without any dampers or soft-close features, and I would like to make them more comfortable to use, especially for the heavier kitchen drawers.

Does anyone have good solutions or experience with how to retrofit these easily and without major modifications? Are there specific retrofit kits compatible with Metod drawers, or do you need to replace the entire drawer slides?

I would appreciate any tips, recommendations for suitable accessories, and practical advice on what to consider during the retrofit, such as installation, load capacity, or compatibility. Thank you!

Hey Verena40, good plan! 😊 Adding soft-close to Metod drawers is definitely doable, and an automatic closing mechanism makes everyday kitchen use much more pleasant.

There are actually retrofit kits from third-party suppliers that can be adapted to existing metal runners or wooden drawers. However, you should make sure that the soft-close mechanism matches the drawer widths and types – for Metod, there are different depths and materials, for example.

Another option is to replace the existing slides entirely with soft-close slides. This often works well with Metod because IKEA keeps the dimensions very standardized.

A tip: When installing, pay attention to adjusting the closing mechanism so the drawers don’t become too stiff and the damper can work effectively. That way, closing is really smooth – almost like magic 😄.

Very good question. There are basically two practical options for retrofitting IKEA Metod drawers with automatic closing:

- Replacing the existing slides with fully integrated soft-close or push-to-open slides specifically designed for Metod.
- Retrofit kits that attach as dampers to the existing slides. This option is more cost-effective but less durable and may slightly affect functionality.

It is important to consider the drawer width and type of slides (e.g., undermount or side-mounted) when replacing, as different systems exist within Metod.

Additionally, proper adjustment of the slides during installation is crucial to ensure optimal performance. Metal slides with integrated soft-close technology generally offer better durability than simple retrofit dampers.

Conclusion: If the budget allows, I recommend fully replacing the slides with integrated soft-close mechanisms. Retrofit dampers are more of a compromise.

I completely agree with that. If you choose to install retrofit soft-close dampers, be sure to check the fit carefully. Otherwise, the drawer may stick or not close properly.
