Hello everyone, I want to retrofit my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinet fronts with a soft-close feature because the doors currently close quite loudly and uncontrollably without any dampers. As is well known, Metod doors are delivered without integrated soft-close technology, and so far I see two options: either attaching separate door dampers or completely replacing the hinges with soft-close ones. I’m particularly interested in how to do this cleanly from a technical point of view and in a visually appealing way. Are there specific soft-close hinge models that can be easily purchased and swapped in? Or are door dampers a reliable alternative? What level of effort should I expect when removing the doors and considering the hinges? And do the hinges need to cover all types and sizes of Metod doors, or are there differences depending on size/type? I look forward to your practical tips and experiences.

The simplest solution is to buy soft-close hinges directly from IKEA and replace the old ones. Metod hinges with integrated soft-close are available as standard replacement parts. When you replace them, you don’t need any additional dampers on the outside. For removal, you only need a Phillips screwdriver. If you only want extra dampers that attach to the door, they don’t look as neat and aren’t always compatible.

Retrofitting soft-close functionality on IKEA Metod doors works best by replacing the hinges with soft-close models. These hinges are specially designed for the Metod system and provide a smooth, dampened closing motion integrated directly into the door mechanism. While it is possible to install separate door dampers, they usually come with downsides: they are visible, can affect the appearance, and installation tends to be a bit fiddly.

When replacing the hinges, you need to:
- Completely remove the old hinges.
- Purchase new soft-close hinges as original IKEA hinges (e.g., the “METOD Soft-Close Hinge” model).
- Reattach the door and possibly adjust it, which is not difficult.

Keep in mind that IKEA offers different hinge sizes and opening angles. The soft-close models generally fit standard Metod doors and should be compatible, but check the exact type of your current hinges.

The effort involved is manageable and requires no special tools—a screwdriver is sufficient. With some patience and care, the retrofit is very successful.

I completely agree with that. Regarding technical details:
- IKEA Metod doors typically use 35 mm (1.4 inches) stainless steel hinges.
- The soft-close hinges are vibration- and noise-damped through an integrated gas spring damper.
- Retrofitting by complete replacement is mechanically more efficient than adding aftermarket dampers.

Carefully check whether your doors have clip-on or cup hinges. Although the retrofit hinges are compatible, it is still worth comparing beforehand to ensure the drill hole positions match.

I recommend buying the original hinges from IKEA as replacement parts. Even alternative third-party options are often unreliable regarding fit and durability.

In summary: completely new soft-close hinges are functionally and aesthetically superior to door dampers.

Well, that can definitely be changed – with a bit of DIY skill, you can quickly turn your kitchen into a door wellness retreat! 😄

My advice: simply replace the cabinet doors’ hinges with soft-close hinges. It worked so well for me that my kids hardly ever slam the doors anymore. Especially when you consider how much noise stress you can eliminate, the effort is definitely worth it.

And if you’re after a more extravagant look, you can also install silent dampers on the sides, but honestly, if you want something good-looking and functional, IKEA’s original soft-close hinge is the best choice.

Good luck with the retrofit – it easily creates a more relaxed atmosphere in any kitchen!
