Hello everyone, I have some Hemnes wardrobe doors from IKEA in my apartment and would like to retrofit them with a soft-close function. I know that IKEA does not offer this feature for the Hemnes doors themselves, but rather for hinges from other series. So my question is: How can I add soft-close functionality to IKEA Hemnes doors? Are there compatible soft-close hinges that can be easily swapped in, or is it better to use separate soft-close dampers? I appreciate any tips, especially about which products fit well and how complicated the installation is. Thanks in advance!

For Hemnes doors, you should replace the hinges entirely with soft-close models. IKEA does not offer a suitable soft-close version for Hemnes, but universal soft-close hinges work well. Alternatively, soft-close dampers mounted on the door can also be effective.

Retrofit of a soft-close feature on IKEA Hemnes doors is definitely doable but requires some consideration and steps. Hemnes doors use classic hinge types that IKEA does not supply with integrated soft-close technology.

There are two main ways to retrofit a soft-close function:

- Complete replacement of the existing hinges with soft-close hinges. You should make sure the new hinges have the same drilling pattern to avoid drilling additional holes. Most universal hinges with the standard 35 mm (1.38 inches) drill hole generally fit well; however, Hemnes doors may have deviations since IKEA uses older systems here.

- Adding external soft-close dampers, which are installed either on the side or top of the door frame or cabinet carcass. This option is a bit less elegant because the damper might be visible. However, it is flexible and does not require special hinges.

When removing and installing, the doors should be taken off the hinges, old hinges removed, and new ones attached. Make sure to align the doors correctly, as soft-close hinges are more sensitive to installation errors, which can lead to poor performance.

Have you measured which hinges are currently installed? And are your doors swing, folding, or hinged doors? That would help to refine the recommendation further.

Absolutely, that hits the mark! I once tried adding a soft-close function to my Hemnes cabinets myself, and I have to say – patience is truly key here. 😊

I chose external dampers that are discreetly attached to the side. The advantage: they are simple to install and you don’t need to replace the hinges, which is often tricky with Hemnes because not all soft-close hinges fit. Once the dampers were installed, you could immediately notice how the doors closed much more smoothly – no more slamming, more like a gentle whisper.

A small tip: if you decide to go with external dampers, it’s best to try them on one door first. That way you can see how it looks for your setup and whether you’re happy with the small “add-on” on the side visually.

Good luck with the upgrade, the Hemnes doors will really stand out then!
