Hello everyone, I would like to retrofit my IKEA Billy shelves with LED lighting to enhance their appearance and improve visibility for books and decorative items. Now the question is, what is the best approach: Which type of LED strips work well for Billy shelves, how can I mount them effectively without damaging the shelf, and what power supply is recommended when lighting several units? I am also interested if anyone has experience with integrating switches or motion sensors into the shelving, and if there are any considerations regarding wiring or safety. I appreciate any tips, recommendations for suitable products, or assembly guides. Thanks in advance!

A centralized power supply with a sufficiently rated 12V power adapter is advisable

Exactly, and to add: If you want convenience, you can also use a 12V distribution block with fuses to protect each shelf individually. For cable connections, I recommend using connectors or soldering with heat shrink tubing to prevent short circuits.

Regarding your question about cable routing: The back panel of the Billy shelves is made of thinner material, so you can attach cables with adhesive tape or clips without needing to drill large holes. Alternatively, you can slightly lift or loosen the back panel to run cables behind it, which often looks neater.

I simply attached LED strips under the shelves of my Billy bookcases using double-sided tape. I routed the cable out the back and plugged it into an outlet. For the switch, just insert an inline switch into the power cord, and that’s it.

Hello Goklo, I think your question is very detailed! To make the lighting really effective, you should pay attention to the color temperature of the LED strips. Warm white (about 2700K-3000K) creates a cozy atmosphere, while neutral white (3500K-4000K) provides more brightness and clarity.

For installation, you could also use LED profiles (aluminum channels) that you attach to the edges of the shelf. This improves heat dissipation from the LEDs and makes the light more even.

You can install motion sensors if you want, but keep in mind that depending on the wiring, longer cable runs or additional components might be required.

If you like, I can also give you tips on how to run the cables as invisibly and safely as possible along the wall or the back of the shelf without damaging it.

I don’t find the idea of using motion sensors with Billy shelves necessarily practical. The response time and sensitivity can often cause malfunctions, especially when the shelf is stationary and the light needs to be turned on.

Additionally, the wiring complexity increases unnecessarily when simple switches are sufficient and work reliably. Does anyone have solid experience with motion sensors in shelving? Or are they more of a gimmick?

I don’t necessarily think that motion sensors make sense for Billy bookcases.

In my view, it really depends on how you use them. At my home, it’s often convenient when the light turns on automatically as I open the shelf or approach it. This is especially helpful in dark areas and adds real comfort. However, I admit that the installation can be more complex and not everyone needs this feature.

It’s important that the sensors are well adjusted to avoid frequent false triggers. For those who enjoy technology, it’s a great feature. For others, it might not be worth it.

I installed this myself because I often enter the room at night, and the light is pleasantly dimmed and activated by motion. It is important to choose a high-quality motion sensor with easily adjustable sensitivity and to position it so that the detection zone does not cover the entire apartment.

Conceptually, this requires a bit more effort but is technically feasible and not just a gimmick. Short delay times and manual override options should be available.

Maybe Goklo can also say whether the shelf is located in a central area of the room or more secluded—that affects how useful it is.
