Hello everyone, I am planning to repurpose my IKEA Platsa system, which I currently use as a traditional wardrobe, but I would like to make it more functional. Specifically, I am interested in how this modular system can be adapted for uses other than just storing clothes. Are there any creative ideas for using it as a home office setup, room divider, or even as a multifunctional piece of furniture? It is important to me that the structure remains stable, and ideally that the existing IKEA fittings or interior components can be used effectively. I look forward to ideas, suggestions, or personal experiences!

You can use PLATSA very well as a room divider by arranging modules without doors openly and decorating them with plants or boxes. Combining it with desktop panels also works well to set up a small office.

Hello Mariellaka, the PLATSA system is very flexible and ideal for a variety of repurposing options. For example, if you want to create a small workspace, you can arrange individual modules as storage under a countertop, creating a spot for a home office. For dividing living spaces, taller, closed modules are suitable, as they not only visually separate areas but also provide storage. Additionally, some interior fittings can be reused by replacing clothes rails with shelves or using drawers as organizers for office supplies. It is important to keep the maximum load capacity of the modules in mind to ensure their stability. Do you have any specific room conditions or dimensions that we should consider?

I transformed my PLATSA system into a media and technology cabinet. To do this, I equipped some modules with cable openings and replaced the back panels with thinner ones to make wiring the devices easier. Many of the included components, such as drawer inserts, work well for smaller electronic parts. Switching to open shelves also creates a lighter feel if the originally closed cabinet seems too bulky. If you’re planning something similar, we can discuss the necessary adjustments.

As an addition: For a small children's room, I used PLATSA as toy storage by installing many open compartments and using different colored boxes. This way, everything has its place, and the system stays organized.

As a supplement: The stability of PLATSA when repurposed mainly depends on how the modules are connected and secured. Open shelving without additional anchoring can easily tip over, especially when built tall or loaded unevenly. For room dividers or seating with storage, I recommend using the special connectors IKEA provides for PLATSA, as well as securing the units to the wall or floor. The weight of the modified parts should also be considered, particularly if you plan to store heavy items or technical equipment.
