Hello everyone,

I have some Ikea Brimnes furniture with minor damages such as loosened edges, chipped surfaces, and wobbly drawer slides. Since I don’t plan to replace the furniture completely, I am looking for tips and tricks on how to repair these common issues easily and with simple tools. I’m especially interested in methods that don’t require special professional equipment and can be done quickly, for example, how to properly glue edges back or stabilize drawers.

Can you help me with which materials to use and what to watch out for to ensure the repairs last longer? Thanks in advance!

Hello Begage,

First of all, I think it’s very sensible to approach repairs on your Ikea BRIMNES furniture with minimal effort to extend its lifespan. For the issues you described—loose edges, chipped surfaces, and wobbly drawer slides—you can achieve a lot with materials like wood glue, contact adhesive, or double-sided furniture tape.

- For loose edges, it’s best to use a good wood glue or PVAc adhesive. Apply the glue thinly, press the edge gently, and secure it with clamps or heavy books for several hours.
- For chips, you can gently roughen the area with fine sandpaper and then repair it using a suitable touch-up pen or wood filler. Sometimes a clear wood varnish alone can visually restore a lot.
- For wobbly drawer slides, I recommend checking all screws and possibly reinforcing them with small wooden shims glued in place or by using appropriate washers to improve stability.

I hope this helps you get started. If you want to know more about the exact procedure, just ask!

Exactly! And if you don’t have clamps, I usually use plenty of kitchen paper and place a few heavy books on top. It works surprisingly well.

One more tip: make sure no glue residue remains on the surface, as it can cause unsightly stains. A damp cloth is your best friend for cleaning right afterward.

For chipped areas, you can also simply stick a small piece of masking tape over them before sanding – this helps keep the fine wood fibers in place.

Wobbly drawers? Check if the sliding rails are completely straight. Sometimes the thin metal parts bend, and if you carefully straighten them by hand, the drawer will run much smoother afterward.

Good luck, it’s not as difficult as it seems.

Hello Begage,

I would like to go into more detail about repairing BRIMNES furniture because IKEA furniture often uses simple constructions and thinner materials, which can be further damaged if handled improperly.

First, it is crucial to carefully assess the damage: Is it a detached edge, a dented or chipped particleboard, or a stiff or wobbly drawer runner?

- For detached edges, a good wood glue is usually the best solution. Preparation is key: Make sure the bonding surfaces are clean and dry. Then apply the glue thinly and evenly. Clamping is essential; without pressure, the result can quickly be unsatisfactory.

- For chipped surfaces, especially when the finish is damaged, a wood filler is recommended. After drying, sand it smooth with fine sandpaper (grit 240+). Afterwards, touch up with a suitable water-resistant varnish or furniture marker. I recommend carefully matching the color — there are different color variants of BRIMNES, so it’s worth comparing beforehand.

- BRIMNES drawer runners are often simple plastic or metal inserts that can easily slip out or wobble. Check all screws and fastenings carefully. If the screws are loose or worn out, I suggest using wood glue with small wooden shims as spacers to improve the fit. In extreme cases, replacing the runner system may help, which you can find with some patience at your local hardware store.

- Please note: In all repairs, handle the furniture surface gently to avoid causing further damage to the finish. Always work with appropriate gloves and finish with a fine polish to protect the surface.

If you can provide more details about the exact damage, I’ll be happy to offer more targeted advice.
