Hello everyone,

I have a fundamental question that is very important to me while renovating my Ikea Pax doors: How can I remove Ikea Pax doors without leaving any visible marks or damage on the cabinet frame or the doors?

I’m not just referring to carefully taking the doors off, but especially to avoiding damaged drill holes or stripped screw holes. Hinges and other fasteners should also remain intact, in case I want to reattach the doors later.

I assume there are certain tricks or tools to detach the doors as gently as possible. Are there any particular steps to consider, or is it generally straightforward with Ikea Pax? What happens if you remove the doors after several years – how flexible or durable are the materials? Thanks in advance for your experiences and tips!

Hello Pinluigi,

I completely understand your concern, as the Ikea Pax doors are indeed designed for easy installation and removal – however, you need to be careful during disassembly to avoid leaving any marks.

First of all: For most Pax doors, the hinges are attached with small mounting clips that usually can be removed easily with gentle pressing or pulling. When doing this, you should keep the following points in mind:

- Use a small flathead or Phillips screwdriver to carefully loosen the clips rather than pulling them out by force.
- Pull the doors straight back and avoid twisting them, as this can cause the wood or paint on the edges to come off.
- The screws in the hinges are usually screwed into predrilled holes with metal sleeves (eccentric fittings) that improve stability. If they are already screwed in, you can safely unscrew them – but if they are very tight, proceed carefully to avoid enlarging the hole.
- If you have plastic or metal covers on the hinges, gently remove them using a plastic spatula to prevent scratches.

A common issue is that repeated mounting and dismounting can wear out the screw holes, but this can usually be avoided with the right screws and by not applying excessive force.

In summary, I would recommend:
- Work in a well-lit area.
- Use small tools that fit the hinges well.
- Remove the doors slowly and evenly without sudden movements.

Before I go into more detail – how old are the doors, and what condition are the surfaces and hinges currently in?

That sounds very plausible, thank you! The doors are about 3 years old and overall in good condition, but I want to remove them completely once to clean the interior of the frame and maybe lubricate the hinges.

The doors are painted, so they are sensitive to mechanical stress.

I’m also interested in whether there are specific tools to minimize the risk of visible scratches on the paint and edges. Additionally, how is it best to handle any built-in nuts without damaging them?

Is there any recommendation on whether to fully remove the screws or leave them partially in place? I am concerned that the threads might get stripped or damaged otherwise. Thanks for any further tips!

Hello Pinluigi,

I have personally dismantled several Ikea Pax doors and can share my experience:

- It is indeed better to fully loosen all the screws when removing the doors. When unscrewing, be careful not to force it or damage the wood.
- It’s best to use a suitable cordless drill with low torque, or a good manual screwdriver, to avoid stripping the screw holes by accidentally over-turning the screws.
- To protect the surface, you can wrap polishing felt or a thin cloth around your tools when working close to the finish.
- Plastic spatulas work well for prying off covers, for example on the hinges.

Regarding the press-in nuts, they are usually quite sturdy. If you have to pry them out, I strongly advise against it, as this will definitely leave marks. When you remove the doors, the nuts generally don’t get in the way as long as the screws are taken out.

My tip: Loosen the screws slightly with the right tool first, then carefully pry the doors off the hinges. It can help to lift the doors slightly and then tilt them away.

It sounds a bit complicated—and it is somewhat—but with patience, it works without problems. If you want, I can write a short step-by-step guide.

I would add that while this protection helps, you shouldn’t rely on it alone to fully prevent damage to the material. Ultimately, how force is applied to the door is critical.

Smaller plastic pry tools or so-called "spudger" tools from the electronics field have proven effective for delicate surfaces. They are thin but still provide leverage and cause almost no scratches.

Additionally, I find it important not to remove all screws blindly, but to work from the inside out to carefully release the door’s tension. A complete removal is possible, but the risk of the door warping increases depending on how it was installed.

Finally, my question to Pinluigi: Do you plan to reinstall the doors immediately after removal, or is some modification planned? This is important for choosing the right dismantling method.
