Hello everyone,

I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and want to reinforce the shelves without visibly changing the appearance of the unit. My main goal is to increase the load capacity of the shelves since I plan to store heavy books and some technical equipment on them. Could you please share tips on which methods or materials are suitable to strengthen the shelves internally, so that nothing is noticeable or altered from the outside?

I would also appreciate advice on whether the reinforcement should be applied directly along the edges or rather over the entire underside of the shelves, and whether it is better to use additional wooden strips or thin metal profiles. Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

Thank you very much for the many helpful answers!

Here is a summary of what I have learned so far:

- Use hardwood strips at least 8-10 mm (0.3-0.4 inches) thick
- Ideally, glue them to the underside of the shelves and additionally secure them with flat-head screws
- The strips should be painted or sanded to match the color so that nothing is visible
- For heavier loads, consider adding an additional central support bar

I will probably get beech wood strips and then proceed according to your instructions.

One last question for the experts: If I insert the screws from below, is it sufficient for them to grip only 15-20 mm (0.6-0.8 inches) into the shelf? Or should I use longer screws? Thanks in advance!

A very good question!

A 15-20 mm (0.6-0.8 inches) penetration depth into wood is often sufficient with a strong screw and good material quality. However, since BILLY shelves are made of MDF, which can be more prone to tearing out, I would recommend using screws that are at least 25 mm (1 inch) long to provide a better safety margin.

Also, use screws with coarse threads designed for MDF or wood-based panels, as they hold better. When screwing into solid wood strips, pre-drill carefully to prevent splitting.

In summary: 25 mm (1 inch) long screws are optimal and more secure, they distribute the load better and ensure long-lasting joints.

Just a small additional tip:

Once the moldings are fully installed, you can even attach felt pads or thin foam to the undersides. This protects your floor from vacuum cleaners and other equipment while still keeping the pads discreet.

It might sound a bit excessive, but it adds a touch of quality and durability.

Good luck with your project! 🙂
