Hello everyone,
I have a Malm bed from IKEA, and for some time now, a constant squeaking noise has been bothering me when lying down or moving. The sound seems to come from the connection between the slatted base and the frame or the metal fittings at the headboard or footboard, but I’m not sure if it could also be caused by the screws or the wooden slats.
So far, I’ve tried tightening the screws, but that only helped temporarily. I don’t want to just try things randomly without a plan. Does anyone have specific tips or experience on how to permanently reduce or eliminate the squeaking noise? Maybe there are special lubricants, padding materials, or other proven methods?
I’m looking forward to your practical suggestions. Thanks in advance!

The issue with squeaking noises in MALM beds is often caused by friction at the connection points.
1. Check the screws and tighten them if necessary – you’ve already done this, but also inspect the threads for any damage.
2. Use Teflon or silicone spray on metal-to-metal contacts. These are odorless and do not attract dirt.
3. For wooden joints, felt or rubber pads between the contact surfaces help reduce friction.
4. For the slatted bed base support: if it consists of wooden slats, applying a little wax or furniture oil to thin fabric strips and placing them between the slatted frame and bed frame can prevent squeaking.
Using the wrong lubricants (e.g., oil) can attract dirt and make the problem worse. Also, make sure no loose parts are rattling.

The problem with squeaking noises in MALM beds is often caused by friction at the connection points. That sounds very helpful to me, especially the tip about using felt or rubber pads. I had a similar problem with my bed before, and when I simply attached some self-adhesive felt pads, the noise stopped. Of course, you need to be patient until you find the exact spot where the noise is coming from.
It might also be a good idea to completely disassemble the bed, clean all the parts, and then carefully reassemble everything. This way, you can prevent dust or small wood splinters from causing the issue.
Have you tried checking whether the squeaking noise only occurs under load or if it happens even when you just touch or move the bed?
I recommend a step-by-step approach to effectively eliminate squeaking:
1. Locate the source of the squeak: Gently move the bed while someone listens, or use a thin piece of paper to slide between components.
2. Disassemble the bed: Completely remove the slatted frame, loosen screws, and check all connections.
3. Cleaning: Remove dust, wood chips, or dirt with a dry cloth.
4. Lubrication: Apply silicone or Teflon spray to metal connections. For wooden parts, you can use furniture wax.
5. Cushioning: Attach felt pads or thin wool felt to wooden surfaces that contact each other.
6. Reassemble: Securely tighten all screws again; for wooden joints, consider adding wood glue (but only after consultation, since it creates a permanent bond).
7. Test: Perform a load test. If noises persist, repeat step 1.
Please provide feedback when you start using this method—I’m happy to assist with the process.

Maybe there are special lubricants, padding materials, or other proven methods?I managed to stop the squeaking on my MALM by applying a bit of baby powder into the screw holes and at the wood joints 🙂 It’s a clean solution that doesn’t leave any oil or grease residue. Just sprinkle a little into the contact points, wiggle it a few times to spread it evenly, and the annoying noises were gone.
Give it a try—it costs almost nothing and doesn’t make a mess. Of course, you should first tighten all screws properly and check that everything is firmly in place.
