I have an IKEA Metod kitchen with drawers that unfortunately are quite loud and rattling when closed. This noise is especially disturbing with the large drawers, particularly in the morning or evening when it’s quiet. I have already checked whether the rails are properly installed and if anything is rubbing, but the problem remains.

My question is: How can I effectively reduce the noise caused by opening and closing IKEA Metod drawers? Are there any proven solutions, such as soft-close dampers or other helpful tricks, that can be easily implemented without completely changing the construction? I would appreciate practical tips and experiences.

I’m very familiar with that; those noises can be really annoying. The first thing you should check is whether the drawers are properly aligned. Often, noises occur when the drawer slides are not installed parallel or at exactly the same height.

Another tip is to clean and lightly lubricate the drawer runners – silicone sprays work well for this since they repel dust and don’t become sticky. Oil is less suitable here because it attracts dirt.

Additionally, IKEA offers special soft-close dampers that you can retrofit. Installation isn’t very complicated, but it does require some basic DIY skills.

If the cabinet carcass is too lightweight, you can also attach small felt strips or soft seals inside to soften the impact.

In summary:
- Check and adjust the drawer slides
- Clean and lubricate with a suitable spray
- Retrofit soft-close dampers
- Add cushioning materials inside the cabinet

If you need more details, feel free to ask.

That is correct. Additionally, I would like to point out that IKEA Metod drawers usually come with ball-bearing slides, whose damping and smoothness strongly depend on the quality of installation and internal pressure.

From a technical perspective, noise can be minimized through the following approaches:
- Using high-quality glide or plastic inserts at contact points
- Replacing or upgrading to soft-close slides specifically designed for Metod
- Checking and, if necessary, readjusting screws and connectors, as mechanical play can cause rattling
- Cleaning the guide rails and removing foreign objects as well as buildup

Simply adding felt or foam strips has limited effect, as the cause usually lies in mechanical play and misalignment of the slides. However, prioritizing investment in soft-close dampers is recommended, as they significantly reduce running noise and also increase the durability of the drawers.

This is a very complex issue, as noise generation in furniture is influenced by multiple factors. I would recommend breaking down the analysis into several steps:

1. Condition of the drawer slides: Check for wear, deformation, or debris that might hinder movement or cause rattling.

2. Damping systems: IKEA originally offers soft-close dampers, which can also be retrofitted. These significantly reduce noise by slowing down the closing action.

3. Contact surfaces between drawer and cabinet: Often, hard impacts or firm contact points cause unpleasant noises here. Felt or foam strips applied to the interior surfaces can help.

4. Check screw connections: Sometimes a screw or nut loosens, causing rattling. Retightening is advisable.

5. Material expansion due to temperature fluctuations may also play a role – especially with wood-based materials, stresses occur that can be heard during opening or closing.

6. Installation of alternative drawer runners: There are compatible drawer slides with better damping available that can be used as replacements.

Have you tested whether the noise is louder when closing or opening? Different causes may apply depending on the motion phase. And how old is the kitchen? This information helps to rule out or confirm wear as the cause.

Excellent approach, that’s exactly what I would recommend as well.

Just an additional tip for maintenance: If you decide to lubricate the rails, avoid greasy oils. Silicone spray or dry lubricants based on PTFE are much better suited because they don’t attract dirt and last longer.

One more note regarding adjustment: Metod drawers often have adjustment screws on the sides or underneath (depending on the model), which allow you to precisely align the drawer position. Simply removing and putting the drawer back in place usually isn’t enough to stop rattling.

Yes, retrofitting soft-close dampers is the best option because it maintains the functionality and significantly improves comfort. Installation guides are also available from IKEA that explain the process step-by-step.

If you like, I can list the common models and briefly explain how the installation works.
