Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my bedroom and considering how to customize and improve the IKEA PLATSA furniture for this purpose. The PLATSA series is very flexible by design, but I am especially looking for ideas on how to make the standard modules not only functional but also visually more appealing – for example, through custom paint finishes, alternative handles, integrated lighting, or clever storage solutions inside the cabinets. Does anyone have practical experience or creative approaches on how to best adapt the PLATSA furniture for a bedroom? I would like to hear both smaller DIY tips and more complex remodeling ideas to get a comprehensive understanding of what is possible.

That’s exactly what bothers me about IKEA furniture: this universal functionality often results in a dull, almost sterile look. Why not think outside the box? With simple measures like using wallpaper scraps as backs or unusual materials such as leather coverings instead of the standard fronts, you can break away from the “industrial look.” Color accents? Definitely, but always without compromising minimalism. And who says you have to stick with IKEA handles? Changing the handles, even just to vintage-style knobs or minimalist leather straps, makes a huge difference. For lighting, I would go with a combination of LED strips and switchable spotlights – this creates atmosphere with little cost but great effect.

I would recommend replacing the white fronts with wood-effect or pastel-colored foil finishes. LED strips inside the shelves provide pleasant lighting. Often, that’s all you need.

Drawer inserts and boxes are practical for keeping things organized. Additionally, you can create patterns on fronts using tape or paint, which gives a fresh and personalized look.

Interesting approach, but it should be noted that wallpaper or leather on furniture is generally not very durable. An alternative idea would be to use wood veneers or modern high-pressure laminate (HPL) instead of leather – these materials are sturdy and have a high-quality appearance. I also find it important not to underestimate the stability of PLATSA modules when modifying them: sometimes it makes sense to add reinforcements, especially when replacing doors or drawers.

That reminds me: look for furniture handles made from clay or wood that you can make yourself. This way, with just a few materials, you can give your furniture a personal touch—almost as if your PLATSA is about to become a one-of-a-kind piece. And with warm colors on the walls plus subtle lighting, you’ll immediately feel much more comfortable. One more suggestion: try magnetic door catches instead of handles; this creates a neat appearance and is very practical.
