ruferencHello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit for my living room and want to protect the surface as best as possible from scratches and stains. The standard surface is lacquered or coated and seems sensitive to sharp objects, liquids, and everyday wear and tear. So my specific question is: based on your experience, what methods or products are most effective in protecting the IKEA Besta surface from scratches, wear, and stubborn stains like red wine, coffee, or grease? Are there special sealants, films, or care products you would recommend? Also, what about cleaning to maintain the protective effect in the long term? I appreciate any tips, including advice on common mistakes to avoid when protecting or caring for the surface. Thanks in advance!

I understand your concern, as the painted surfaces of IKEA BESTA are not very resistant to scratches and stains. From a technical perspective, I recommend a multi-step protection approach:
- First, it is advisable to place a transparent protective film or a matte acrylic glass sheet on the surface. This directly prevents mechanical damage. There are films specifically designed for furniture that can be removed without leaving residue.
- For regular protection and cleaning, using a mild furniture care product with added wax is recommended, as it impregnates and seals the surface at the same time. Products containing silicone or paraffin have proven to be useful.
- Stains such as red wine or grease should be wiped off immediately with a damp cloth if possible. More stubborn dirt can be removed with a mixture of warm water and a mild, pH-neutral soap. Avoid abrasive or harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the paint and destroy the protective layer.
- Gentle maintenance every few weeks helps to keep the seal intact.
Regarding sealants: there are special furniture lacquer sprays that can be applied, but before using them on BESTA, I would recommend testing compatibility on an inconspicuous spot.
I would be interested to know if your BESTA has a special surface (high gloss or matte), as this can influence the choice of protection. How often is the piece of furniture used, and in what kind of environment is it placed? These factors also affect the protective measures.

To add to the previous advice:
IKEA BESTA furniture is mainly made of coated particleboard, with a surface layer of melamine resin. While this coating is resistant to scratches and wear, it is not indestructible.
Therefore, I recommend:
- For optimal protection, use a transparent PE or PVC protective film specifically made for furniture surfaces. These films are resistant to sharp objects and relatively unaffected by liquids.
- Alternatively, thin, custom-cut acrylic or glass panels can be placed on top of the BESTA furniture to enhance protection without significantly affecting its appearance.
- Regular maintenance with mild, non-alkaline cleaners is important. A pH-neutral cleaner helps prevent damage to the coating.
- Avoid cleaners containing alcohol or harsh solvents, as they can dull or roughen the melamine surface, which in turn promotes scratching.
- For grease splatters and red wine stains, I recommend quickly wiping the area with lukewarm water and a lint-free, soft cloth.
If you want to seal the surface, common furniture polishes containing hard wax are advisable.
The sealant, however, needs to be reapplied regularly, depending on use, at least every 3–6 months.
A thin protective film can reduce the need for sealing by preventing direct wear.
One important final note: avoid self-adhesive films that can damage the original surface when removed.
This way, you achieve a long-lasting and gentle protective solution for your BESTA.
