Good morning everyone,

Lately, I have often read that owners of IKEA PAX wardrobes experience difficulties protecting their furniture from damage—whether it’s scratches on the surfaces, damage to the edges, or even material deformation due to improper use. I would like to know from you: How can I protect my IKEA PAX from damage?

I am especially interested in which protective measures you apply during assembly and daily use to prevent scratches, how to protect sensitive surfaces from mechanical impacts, and if there is anything to consider in terms of maintenance to minimize long-term damage.

I have also thought about whether using films or protective pads might help and whether the choice of placement location plays a role.

I look forward to practical, tried-and-tested tips, including how to handle the sliding doors and metal frames. Thanks in advance for your support!

To protect melamine surfaces and edges, I recommend the following approach:

- Use special self-adhesive, transparent protective films designed for furniture. These are thin, nearly invisible, and provide good scratch resistance.
- Alternatively or additionally, thin plastic edge protectors can be applied to exposed edges.
- For moisture prevention: place small, replaceable moisture absorbers (e.g., silica gel packets) in the room or inside the cabinet.
- Ensure regular ventilation, especially if the cabinet is located near a more humid window.

A combination of mechanical protection and proper maintenance helps prevent the most common damage.

Do you already use certain cleaning products? Some aggressive cleaners can also damage the surface.

The doors should ideally not get scratched, especially the sliding doors, which usually have a metal edge.

Yes, I know that well. To prevent the sliding doors from rubbing against each other, I attached small felt strips on the contact surfaces. That really helps!

Also, where the wardrobe is close to the wall, I glued soft bumpers – this protects the edges from damage over time.

Regarding moisture: If the window is nearby, a type of curtain or a temperature buffer (e.g., a small radiator) can help absorb fluctuations.

Don’t worry too much; Pax is actually quite durable if you handle the doors carefully.

Summary of my experiences:

- Always keep the sliding door tracks clean to prevent scratches caused by dirt.
- Apply protective films or edge guards if necessary.
- Use mild cleaning agents.
- Maintaining a proper distance from the wall helps prevent damage to the edges.

That’s all it takes to keep the PAX in good condition for a long time.

That’s a very good tip. Additionally, I would like to mention that the tracks should be cleaned occasionally with a dry cloth.

I also recommend checking, in case of moisture issues, whether the wardrobe is set up correctly – a slight tilt backwards can help prevent any moisture from seeping into the cabinet.

Furthermore, using suitable mats underneath can separate the cabinet from the floor to avoid rising damp.

As an addition: For managing moisture, you can also use vapor-permeable membranes on the wall side that allow moisture to escape while remaining breathable. This is especially important if the PAX is located on an external wall with a risk of condensation.

Furthermore, precise alignment when installing the adjustable feet is crucial. Proper adjustment prevents pressure points on the edges or uneven load distribution, which can lead to deformation.

I recommend using plastic edge protectors in the long term, which are often available as accessories for PAX. These especially protect the exposed corners from impacts and abrasion.

How often do you plan to clean and inspect the wardrobe?
