Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen and am now focusing on water protection. Since the area around the sink and dishwasher has a relatively high risk of water damage caused by leaks or excess condensation, I want to protect my kitchen as best as possible and prevent damage. I am especially interested in practical tips on how to protect the Metod cabinet frames and fronts from moisture penetration without compromising the appearance or functionality. Does anyone have experience with special sealants, waterproof coatings, or even structural measures that prove effective in the long run? Any advice on preventing mold growth and proper ventilation for Ikea Metod kitchens would also be greatly appreciated. I want to avoid taking action only after water has already caused damage. Thanks in advance for your input!

A very important question that is often underestimated. Just briefly beforehand: How exactly do you ensure that potential water does not get behind the back panel or into the base? You mention waterproofing – that sounds good, but do you have any evidence or experience regarding how effective the Ikea Metod materials generally are when it comes to water resistance? Metod cabinets are mainly made of wood-based panels, which swell quickly without protection.

From my perspective, a coating with special water-repellent agents can help, but that is only one part. Installation also matters: for example, rubber seals under the sink, silicone joints at critical points, and above all a drip protection sheet under the sink as a base. I also wonder how you build the water protection mechanically without significantly altering the original structure.

Ultimately, it is important to consider whether it might make sense to replace or reinforce the sensitive lower components with other materials to reduce their vulnerability. To me, the information here is lacking – the material is not designed to withstand water permanently.

What have your experiences been so far during installation regarding these points?

@SIMONEMAR3: To prevent water damage in Ikea Metod kitchens, I recommend the following specific measures:

- Apply seals at connection points (e.g., between the sink and the base cabinet) consistently and carefully using high-quality sanitary silicone. Pay attention to the correct drying time.
- Use special water-repellent wood protection coatings for the cabinet carcasses; these are clear and impregnate the material without changing its appearance.
- Install a drip protection plate made of plastic or aluminum under the sink, preferably coated.
- Line the surfaces under the dishwasher and washing machine with waterproof materials (e.g., PVC sheets).
- Ventilation reduces condensation—regularly opening the cabinet doors can help to reduce moisture more quickly.

Additionally, it is advisable to check all connections regularly to detect small leaks early.

Metod-Korpusse bestehen ja vorwiegend aus Holzwerkstoffen, die ohne Schutz schnell aufquellen.

This is exactly why impregnation in wet areas is important.

If a modification is possible, you could replace the carcasses with waterproof panels, although this is usually not necessary if the other protective measures are followed.

Hello @SIMONEMAR3, I think the problem is actually a classic issue with Metod kitchens, which aren’t necessarily designed for high moisture exposure. Still, there are a few clever DIY tricks you can try:

- To protect the kitchen cabinets from splashes, you can use waterproof films or even self-adhesive PVC sealing strips on the inside surfaces of the cabinets. I highly recommend these; they also protect the surfaces from small amounts of water if something spills.

- You can line the area under the sink with special waterproof mats – these are easy to clean and prevent water from directly contacting the wood.

- If you want to get creative: I recently used a thin aluminum sheet as an underlay in my sink area, which I then sealed. It has a somewhat rustic feel but provides excellent protection from leaking water.

I agree, that’s exactly what I did! And don’t worry: you can’t see it anyway.

In general, it’s better to put in a little effort upfront and stay relaxed. That way, you avoid any water-related disasters.

I also find this topic very important and can understand well why this question concerns you. Water damage is frustrating, and especially when you put a lot of care into your kitchen, no one wants to deal with musty mold afterward.

What helped me with my old Metod kitchen was mainly regular checks and small adjustments whenever moisture was detected anywhere.

I can add to my suggestion: besides the technical measures, I found it effective to regularly wipe the base cabinets around the sink area with a mild vinegar solution to prevent bacteria and mold from settling.

I also noticed that immediately drying any drops right after washing dishes quickly prevents problems. In my opinion, this sounds trivial, but especially these small habits provide long-term protection.

Another recommendation: if you have space during installation, you can place moisture-absorbing granules or a dehumidifier inside the cabinet. The investment is worthwhile if you want your kitchen to last longer.
