Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to protect my Malm furniture from water damage. Since these pieces are made of particleboard with a laminated surface, I am unsure how sensitive the edges and the feet actually are. My question is: What specific steps and precautions are effective to protect Malm furniture from water damage without affecting its appearance? Are there any particular care or protective products that are especially recommended, or are structural modifications (e.g., felt pads, protective mats) necessary? I look forward to your experiences and tips, preferably with explanations of why certain measures are useful.

Alternatively, I like to use special edge protection profiles made of plastic or transparent silicone. That sounds interesting; could you please provide a bit more detail? What specific materials are used, and how are the profiles installed? Is this a long-lasting form of protection or more of a temporary solution? I’m curious whether this is something I could do myself or if it’s better to hire a professional.
I’m happy to explain this in more detail:
Edge protection profiles are usually made from flexible plastic materials such as PVC or soft polyurethane, and sometimes silicone. They are designed to cover edges that are particularly sensitive to moisture and to reduce mechanical stress.
Here’s how to apply them:
1. Clean the surface and edge thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease.
2. Cut the profile to the correct size; there are various widths available to suit different edges.
3. Simply snap the profile onto the edge. Many have a slightly springy function that allows them to stay in place without strong adhesives.
4. For additional hold, a transparent, flexible assembly adhesive can optionally be used, which leaves no residue upon removal.
Advantages:
- Highly effective protection against moisture penetration
- Improved mechanical protection
- Not permanent; can be removed without leaving residues
From my own experience, these profiles usually work better than paints, which often crack and peel. You can also install them later on damaged edges. They are simple to handle, so professional help is not necessarily required.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions!
