Hello everyone,
I live with two very active cats and own some furniture from the Ikea Platsa series. Unfortunately, I have noticed that my cats like to scratch at the edges of the furniture and occasionally dig their claws into the surface. This causes unsightly scratches and sometimes even small chips in the material.
So my question to you is: How can I effectively protect Ikea Platsa furniture if I have pets, especially cats or dogs, that tend to scratch or otherwise wear on the furniture? Are there proven methods, such as special protective films, care products, or other tricks to keep the furniture in good condition for as long as possible?
I look forward to all your tips and experiences, as I don’t want to have to keep buying new furniture. Thank you in advance!

For additional information:
- Platsa furniture typically features melamine or foil surfaces, which are especially prone to scratching.
- Protective films should therefore be as thick and clear as possible to avoid affecting the appearance and feel.
- Regular cleaning with appropriate furniture cleaners that do not contain abrasives is important.
Additionally, edge protectors made from materials like transparent polycarbonate can be used. These are simply glued onto the edges and provide mechanical protection.

Additionally, especially for cats, I would recommend using a combination of mechanical protection methods and behavior training alongside scratching posts or play furniture.
Gathering experience about when the animals tend to scratch (e.g., out of boredom) can also help to target measures more effectively.

Place cat scratching posts nearby. That’s a great point!
I also recommend regularly applying catnip or valerian to the scratching posts to encourage the cats to focus on them more. It really helps when the environment is stimulating enough to make furniture less attractive.
Another tip: set clear behavioral boundaries when the cat scratches the furniture. With patience, it really works.
Thank you all for the very helpful and diverse responses!
I will start by following the collected advice: getting protective films and adding edge guards to the furniture corners, as well as placing more scratching posts and toys.
The idea of applying catnip to cat toys and scratching posts sounds promising.
I am also interested if anyone has experience with special furniture care products that harden or make the surface of PLATSA furniture more resistant? I am looking for a solution that not only protects the exterior but strengthens the furniture surface from within.
Looking forward to more tips!
