Good morning everyone,
I recently installed IKEA METOD countertops in my kitchen and want to protect them from stains as best as possible. I’m especially concerned about everyday soiling from food, water spots, and occasional heat exposure from hot pots.
I’m interested in methods you would recommend to preserve the surfaces long-term against discoloration or damage. Are there specific sealants, care products, or cleaning routines that have proven effective? I would also appreciate any experiences regarding the durability of protective treatments on METOD countertops.
Thanks in advance for your tips!

Technical additional coatings are not necessary with proper maintenance.Thank you, that is an important point. I am therefore leaning more towards preventive measures through maintenance and mechanical protection. Are there any specific recommendations for heat-resistant underlays that are particularly suitable for use on METOD worktops?

Are there any special recommendations for heat-resistant underlays that are particularly suitable for use with METOD countertops?Yes, definitely. To protect against heat, you should use heat-resistant mats or, even better, cutting boards and pot holders made from materials like cork, silicone, or wood. These provide enough insulation, are non-slip, and protect the surface.
I advise against using plastic or rubber mats, as they can be damaged by higher temperatures and may leave residues.
Also, always make sure that hot pots are not placed directly on the countertop—even for a short time. Even brief exposure to heat can damage the melamine coating.
Hey everyone! Great thread, I really love tips like these :-)
I treated my IKEA METOD countertop with a thin layer of furniture wax, and it provides really good protection against stains! Of course, water spots rarely occur, but when something drips, just wipe it off, and the surface looks like new.
What’s most important to me is: always enjoy the maintenance! Every little effort pays off, and your kitchen will look great. Hidden tips like these are worth their weight in gold 🙂

Usually, I advise against waxes on laminate-coated surfaces because they can wear off over time and leave residues. Did you use any specific products or have experience regarding durability?
To everyone: When protecting laminate-coated countertops, a careful balance is necessary. Some sealants are purely cosmetic, while others may even affect the surface.
For long-term protection, regular inspections of the surface integrity are recommended to detect minor damage early.
