Hello everyone, I recently purchased several Besta cabinets from Ikea and want to keep the surfaces looking good for as long as possible. Therefore, I am looking for practical and reliable methods to effectively prevent or reduce the common discoloration on these surfaces. I am especially interested in which care products or protective measures have proven effective, whether there are special sealants or film coatings available, and what I should definitely avoid when cleaning in daily use to prevent the white or colored surface from darkening, yellowing, or getting stains. Are there any tips for protecting against UV-related discoloration or stains caused by adhesive residues or contact with certain materials? I look forward to your valuable advice and experiences!
To prevent discoloration on Ikea BESTA surfaces, I recommend the following steps:
- Clean with a non-abrasive, pH-neutral cleaner to avoid damaging the protective layer of the surface.
- Avoid using harsh chemicals such as ammonia or bleach, as these can promote discoloration.
- UV protection is a key issue since the standard coating is not specifically designed for it. This can be addressed by using opaque curtains or positioning the cabinet away from direct sunlight.
- If you want additional surface protection, consider transparent protective films. These are available at hardware stores and are specially made for furniture surfaces.
- For everyday cleaning, use isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth to remove adhesive residues or stains, but apply sparingly and always test in an inconspicuous area first.
In summary: cleaning, avoiding aggressive substances, moderate UV protection, and optional protective films will help maintain the surfaces.

I keep wondering throughout this whole discussion how effective these protective films really are, especially in the long run. Many products on the market promise protection, but often they peel off at the edges or discolor themselves, which can actually make the problem worse.
Furthermore, it would be useful to analyze the impact of the environment: strong sunlight, but also high humidity or temperature fluctuations could soften or discolor certain adhesives or coatings. Does anyone here have reliable experience with this? I am skeptical that simple cleaning and films alone are the best measures.

Hello everyone! 😄
I find this topic really interesting because I recently got some BESTA furniture myself, and those discolorations can be quite frustrating!
What has worked well for me is not just wiping the surfaces but always gently polishing them with a soft, dry microfiber cloth after cleaning – it somehow creates a very fine protective layer that prevents dust and small residues from settling.
I agree, with one addition: don’t use water that’s too hot, as it might accidentally soften the plastic or cause color changes.
Also, I have used small placemats and protective pads for areas that get heavy use; this protects against UV exposure and stains – basically a soft barrier 😊. And very important: try to remove stains or liquids as quickly as possible, otherwise the pigments can soak in deeply.
So: care + small aids = no unpleasant surprises!

It’s best to clean regularly with a damp cloth and mild dish soap, avoiding harsh chemicals.
