Hello everyone,

I recently got an Ikea Besta TV unit and I am generally happy with the design and storage space. However, I am concerned about the durability of the surfaces, especially with daily use. Since the furniture is used frequently and items are placed and moved on it regularly, I want to avoid scratches appearing quickly or damage to the wood/plastic edges.

My question to the community is: What are the most effective ways to protect Ikea Besta from scratches during everyday use? Which materials or home remedies have proven useful to protect the surfaces without compromising the look of the furniture or requiring complicated maintenance? Are there any specific tips for minimizing mechanical wear, especially in homes with children or pets?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

A simple acrylic sheet, cut to size, provides good protection against scratches when placed as a cover on the Besta.

Alternatively, felt pads under decorations or devices standing on the shelf help reduce mechanical wear significantly.

Regular wiping with a dry cloth prevents deposits that can cause scratches.

That is certainly practical, but for me, the question is to what extent such a sheet might affect the aesthetics. This could be particularly noticeable on clear lacquered or matte surfaces, where it may not look as good.

Additionally, it should be considered that both glass and acrylic can scratch themselves and then show unattractive marks. Therefore, the quality of the material is important.

Does anyone have practical experience with how these sheets perform in households with children? Are felt pads sufficient, or are there better protective methods?

A Besta furniture piece is almost a design classic by now – so naturally, you don’t want to cover it with an ugly protective layer that ruins the look. 😄

I placed thin microfiber mats on the surfaces, which are usually used as phone table mats. They’re transparent, non-slip, and protect against scratches if you move items around.

Also, felt pads under the feet of vases or statuettes help a lot to prevent unnecessary damage to the wood. Especially with children, it might be worth considering soft edge protectors for the most dangerous furniture corners – that offers protection on multiple levels. 😉

To effectively prevent scratches on Ikea Besta furniture surfaces, a multi-step approach is recommended:

- Firstly, a thin protective film or a transparent tabletop made of acrylic or glass is very useful, as it largely absorbs mechanical impacts.

- Additionally, all items that are moved should be fitted with felt or fabric gliders to avoid friction damage.

- Regular cleaning with a dry microfiber cloth helps prevent dirt buildup, which can act as abrasive particles.

- For households with children, it is advisable to use edge protection in the form of foam profiles, which reduce both injuries and damage.

It is also recommended not to place heavy objects directly on delicate surfaces where possible or to at least use a soft underlay.

Hey, great to see this topic getting so much discussion! 🙂

I’ve been using a combination of an acrylic sheet and felt pads for a while now, and I have to say, it works really well. This way, the Besta still looks great and I no longer have to worry about scratches!

Additionally, with kids around, we opted for soft corner protectors that not only provide protection but also don’t interfere with the furniture’s appearance. I highly recommend investing in these, because otherwise, scratches are pretty much guaranteed.

So, get your protection in place and enjoy your Besta! 🍀
